Being FIT for the New Year:

As we all come back from the hibernation that is Winter Break, I’m sure we all have told ourselves “only one bite” of your aunt’s delicious chocolate cake or mom’s famous macaroni and cheese. If you’re like me, taking only “one” bite turns into ten.

Going into 2018, here are some tips I’m going to taking into consideration to start this year healthy!

  • Eat – No this is not a typo! Eat, and eat well this year. As much as people believe not eating will help you lose weight, it actually does the opposite. The key is to replace the “not so healthy” foods in your diet with healthier ones, not less food that your body needs!

  • Stay active – As the school semester begins, we all know sticking to an exercise routine gets harder and harder. Little workouts always count, break up an hour throughout your day of different cardio and strength exercises to keep those calories burning and sweat dripping.

  • Find a diet for you – If you’re one to diet, find the one that you and your body enjoy the most. Not every diet is meant for everyone, so don’t be pressured by peers to stick to one plan if it’s just not you!

Here’s to being healthy and happy in 2018! Let’s make this year a great one.

Surviving in the Concrete Jungle:

We all know that New York City is one of the most stressful cities in America, if not, the world. Finding time not only for yourself, but for your mind could be very difficult. Here’s some tips to help bring yourself back to center and survive the concrete jungle.

Recall places you’ve been where you appreciated the sounds.

Summon the places where you’ve enjoyed the imagery.

Experience the elements that contribute to your happiness.

Remember where you were when you experienced deep contentment and meaning.

Stay open-minded.

For myself, I try to stay grounded and in a happy place by going back to inspirations that brought me to where I am today. It sounds cheesy, but Sex and The City, The Carrie Diaries, and Ugly Betty inspired my outward dreams to pursue a career in the fashion industry. So I usually binge watch these shows for impromptu injections of inspiration to keep me going.

Sometimes you have to look back to help you move forward.

Establishing Your LinkedIn Profile:

Whether you are or are not aware of the importance of building a strong LinkedIn professional network, with busy schedules and stressing about the future, sometimes we dismiss our social media. LinkedIn, however, is one type of social media network that should never be dismissed!

Establishing a strong LinkedIn profile and network will propel your chances of finding more opportunities by making YOU stand out of your sea of competitors and makes it easier for your prospective employees to review your knowledge, skills, abilities, and personality traits. Here are a few tips that really helped me build my profile:

1. Have a professional photo

LinkedIn isn’t Tumblr, there is no excuse for not having a professional head shot. Look clean, friendly, and approachable! Remember, first impressions count…even virtually!

2. Have a strong headline and summary

LinkedIn creates your headline with your job title and current company…but you can create your own! Consider making it your specialty and speaking to your audience directly. For example, mine is “Public Relations Student at FIT”, even though I currently have other positions.

Use bullets for your actual summary or make it a power sentence. LinkedIn also allows you to add media, so if you’re creative, even make an introduction video!

 3. Fill out everything

Skills, abilities, volunteer work and associations, education, previous positions, etc. This is all the important stuff that prospective employers are looking forward to seeing, make sure it’s concise and displays YOU.

4. Keep your profile up-to-date

You don’t need to list every. single. thing. you’ve done. But consider maintaining your profile with current career goals and positions that are relevant and timely to your position seeking and network building opportunities.

Go on and make your LinkedIn profiles great!

A Guide to Finding the Perfect Roommate

We all wondered if roommate horror stories are true, and the reality is, they can be! Here are a few tips to get all of you prospective students prepared for selecting a roommate…

1. New/entering students are able to choose from our three residence halls on 27th street: Alumni, Coed, and Nagler. Research the halls, and figure out which one best fits your preferences.

2. Selecting roommate(s) increases the chances of choosing your preferred accommodation. It is to your advantage to have the roommate with the earliest selection date/time choose a room type. So don’t be afraid to reach out on Facebook after you are confirmed for housing!

3. Once a room type is selected, all mutually selected roommates will automatically be assigned. Students eligible for room selection can use Advanced Roommate Search to find other students seeking roommates. Use of this feature is strongly encouraged as there is an advantage to selecting roommate(s). If you do not choose a roommate, one will randomly be assigned.

4. Be sure to completely fill out your MyHousing assessment that will gather information about your living preferences to help find a right match for you.

5. Don’t be afraid to get social – we all have have had to get used to new surroundings, don’t let your shyness get in the way of making connection with people during your roommate search! FIT

Willam Belli: SUCK LESS

FIT’s Barnes & Noble bookstore hosted a book signing and Q&A with drag personality Willam Belli, for her new book Suckless. As a admirer of the drag community, I thought the event was very inspiring and really eye-opening into the world of drag.

“It’s about you and how you can SUCK LESS at a variety of things drag queens are so much better at than the average person”. – Willam Belli.

I’m already half way into the life guide, and yes it’s making me suck less. Being kicked off of a beloved reality show for breaking the rules isn’t a typical path to comedy stardom, but getting the boot from RuPaul’s Drag Race seems to have done just that for Los Angeles comedy queen Willam Belli. Since running afoul of mother RuPaul, Willam has racked up millions of views for his over-the-top (and surprisingly well-sung) music-video parodies, and he’s landed endorsement deals with American Apparel and Sephora. He’s also brought his singularly shameless comedy show to stages around the world.
