Last Semester Goals

Hi everyone!

This week was the first week of my last semester at FIT.  It has both flown by and taken forever to get here!  I’m sad and excited at the same time.  I have been a student for the past 15 or so years of my life – and while I hope to never stop learning, it will be different no longer being enrolled in classes or working towards graduation.  So, I would like to make the most of this semester!  Below are some goals:

  1. Use my student resources more

FIT has amazing labs, computer programs and resources for students, and I regret not using them more!  I’d like to spend some time in the sewing lab, making something!  Additionally, FIT provides the Adobe creative suite free to students, which is super expensive otherwise.  Before I lose access to it I would like to refine my skills more by creating more personal projects in Adobe Illustrator, and finally learning how to effectively use Photoshop.

2. Keep my GPA up

I will admit, since I already have my post-grad job lined up the motivation to have a good GPA has dropped.  However, I would like to still do my best!  Even though GPA is truly just a number, there is satisfaction in trying for the highest number.  I’m going to work away at my studies and homework for my own personal GPA goal.

3. Balance

Since I am working full time this semester, as well as finishing my FIT degree I would like to try to be balanced in my life.  In past semesters I have let my social life slide in order to accommodate work and school, but I’d like to leave a weekend day for fun every week.  Wether it’s going out for dinner or a movie night with friends, just forcing time to be not working and not studying.

What are your goals for this semester?  Let me know!

Semester Activities

Welcome Back Everyone!

I hope you all were able to enjoy your breaks. It definitely felt nice to rejuvenate and prepare for spring semester! In doing so, I have thought about how to make the best of my last semester at FIT. Before assignments and projects kick in, I love to take advantage of what FIT and New York City have to offer. As this is my last spring living in Manhattan (sigh…), I was thinking of of my favorite activities, and things I am yet to try. Here are a few ideas you might want to try too!

FIT Fitness Classes:
FIT offers free athletics/fitness classes, which do not require prior registration. Classes are offered in different categories, such as spin classes, cardio classes, open gym classes, and so on. While athletics classes are a requirement for some majors, not everyone gets the opportunity to try them out. My goal is to try the kickboxing and spin classes before I graduate. Have any of you tried them? I would love to know your thoughts!

NYC Restaurant Week:
Every year, popular restaurants in the city participate in restaurant week. For special, fixed lunch and dinner prices, restaurants offer preset menus to try. A few years back, I tried the fixed dinner at Riverpark in east Manhattan. My friends and I were able to pick from the different options for a three course meal. My main dish was a pumpkin pesto pasta- not only was this delicious, but it was something I never would have thought to try on my own! This is the perfect opportunity to try some new food (for a reasonable price) that you might not have otherwise!

Groupons!:
Recently, a friend and I found an awesome deal for a spa groupon in Koreatown. Before the craziness of the semester begins, my friend and I were able to unwind and spend the day at the different sauna rooms and hot tubs. This is something I would have never done on my own, (especially once my school work picks-up) if I had not seen the offer. Groupon is always promoting different discounts to fun and unique outings. Sometimes, there are even opportunities for additional student discounts- keep an eye out!

These are just a few, unique ideas to make the most of your semester. Of course, we all put all lot of time and energy into school and our work; it is important to take time to enjoy all FIT and the city has to offer! Balance is key, right? What do you all like do make time for during the semester.

Happy first week,
Annmarie x

A Message to the Stressed

stress3

Yes, the first week can be very overwhelming. Between keeping up with first-week tasks and assignments, buying textbooks and finishing up homework, it is easy to find yourself in a stressful situation. On the other hand, this adjustment period is only temporary until you get into the swing of things. It important to remember that all of your hard work will pay off in the end, and most importantly, why you’re here.

You are officially attending one of the top 10 fashion schools globally! That is a huge accomplishment in itself. Whether you are business or design, you are going to learn a wealth of information in two semesters that you will carry with you forever. This is the turning point of your education. You are finally going to school for what you want to make a career out of and that is an amazing thing. There are rough patches along the way, but pretty soon the things you are struggling with will come naturally to you.

Always remember to keep your head up through stressful situations and that hard work truly pays off. Never give up and show them who is boss!
