Things to Do in NYC on a Rainy Day!

Winter is among the Concrete Jungle…

My dorm room view on a rainy day in NYC!

From rain to snow and all in between, winter in New York City can be horrifically beautiful; and like Ashley said make sure to get an umbrella! Flooded curbs and pouring rain won’t stop the city that never sleeps, therefore it shouldn’t stop you from enjoying your day!

Here are a couple of things to do in NYC on rainy day!

  1. Chelsea Market: Take a gastronomic tour of the world at Chelsea Market. Shop at Buon Italia for the best homemade ravioli and imported olive oil and linger over cappuccino in their cafe. Try Thai cuisine, shop for rugs at Imports from Marrakesh.
  2. Museums, Museums, Museums! : New York City is home to a mind-boggling line-up of world-class museums and institutions. You could spend all day dry and cozy inside admiring masterpieces of art and design or marveling at the wonders of the natural world, and with an FIT
  3. Madame Tussauds: Walking through the bright lights of Times Square with crowds of people all around you is an incredible experience — except when it’s raining. If you see the skies start to darken as you’re walking along 42nd Street, dart into the famous wax museum Madame Tussauds for an entertaining afternoon of snapping selfies with your favorite celebrities and other famous folks like Rihanna and Katy Perry to President Obama.
  4. Grand Central Terminal: Classic architecture, a gourmet market, boutiques and quality food — Grand Central is the perfect hideaway for a rainy day afternoon. And, if you decide to escape the city, this is where you can pick up trains that fan out north of NYC. Upon entering, gaze up at the famous astrological ceiling and then head down to the Whispering Gallery, which has this distinct attribute.
  5. One World Observatory: New to NYC, the One World Observatory is a perfect rainy day get-away with an amazing view! Start by ascending to the top of the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere in less than sixty seconds, then look toward the horizon and feel the city’s invincible spirit. With a sky-high restaurant to dine at while looking upon a gloomy and beautiful cloud-filled cityscape, it’s an activity that can be done year-round!

Emotions of Juno

While we’ve heard enough about the winter storm that is Juno, we have yet to see many posts about the current state that we as NYC residents are feeling about this storm, and that is where I come in to help.  You’re welcome.

  1. Hearing about the predicted inches of snow
  2. Immediately telling your roommates/friends/family
  3. Running to the grocery store to stock up on well…snacks.
  4. Seeing the lines and empty shelves.
  5. Dealing with the lines and getting ALL THE SNACKS.
  6. Constantly refreshing your email to see if class is canceled.
  7. Sees class is canceled Monday afternoon and all day Tuesday
  8. Finally reach home and see the storm occurring
  9. But you have Netflix, food, and blankets soo…

Stay safe and be careful out there!  Juno doesn’t stop for anyone.

Notes From The 6 Train: Winter Wonda-Land

In case you all didn’t weren’t attuned…it’s officially winter! Yay!

I know its been feeling quite winter-esque for the past few months, but yesterday marks the official beginning of winter. Winter can be challenging, as it creates of atmosphere of hibernation and isolation. Both of these can be draining, if you let it simply happen to you as opposed to settling into acceptance and/or appreciation.

To be honest, this is the first time in my entire life that I’ve been so welcoming of winter. The cold is difficult for me. And until last winter, I had never actually had to live in real snow (I come from Atlanta, so you know snow was a rarity for me.) However, I noticed a real shift within myself as the winter equinox this time. I am feeling the hibernation energy. More and more I realize how the outer climate impacts the inner climate. Just as all the creatures are preparing for winter, we should be as well. This means some type of hibernation, staying in to work on our passion project, watching, reading or creating all the things you’ve been “meaning to,” and more than anything, this is a time for self reflection. As the year comes to and end, there is no time like the present to review this past year. I don’t mean some basic surface level “review,” but taking a hot bubble bath and plunging into yourself. They’ll be no reason to rush out, the cold wants you to do just a little more self care than usual.

-If that sounds like a bit of a challenge, here are some easy tips via Deepak Chopra to have a happy, healthy, winter. (That’s not boring, because I know that’s one complaint I hear often)

Walk in the sunshine for 10 minutes every day it’s sunny.
Walk in a really cheerful place when it’s cloudy, such as a park of arboretum where the trees are majestic in winter.
Spend regular time with the most cheerful people I know.
Take up a light recreational sport at the community center.
Mentor a young person.
Plan a dream vacation in every detail, living it through beautiful photos and magazine articles so that it feels as real as possible.
Turn quiet time alone into something inspiring by reading spiritual books or poetry.
Write letters, making each as entertaining as possible to the recipient.
These are all energizing options, the very opposite of dull. And that’s the key. Find inputs that are complete opposites of the conditioning that keeps you stuck in a negative situation.

Amazing Memories

This winter break was the best break I have had at FIT thus far. It really helped me get focused and ready to go back again. I had so many adventures with friends and family, that I will always cherish. This was also the first time I didn’t take an online class over break, which was definitely why I relaxed just a little bit more. The beginning of break you saw my adventure blog posts, I went to Atlantic City ( won some money), and hang out with some friends. SO much more has happened since then.

afefaeMy best friend turned 21!( She is in the red dress) so for her birthday we went to PACHA in NYC. It was one of the coolest places I have had the pleasure of going to. There was two floors, a basement, all kinds of entertainment, and guest appearances. PACHA was actually very safe and well monitored. We had a blast, keep in mind if you want to go out for the night it can be a little pricey. Also you have to be over 19 to get in.

wdlHere is another picture of us before we got there. My two best friends Nadia ( next to me) and Ashvini ( birthday girl on the opposite end). They live at an apartment on campus. They all go to Rutgers, which is a few short minutes away from my hometown. Definitely one of the best memories I made over break.

naOne of the biggest things that happened over break was my best friend wasn’t aloud to go back to her school for the semester because she failed a class. This is a very devastating time in your life if it happens to you. It has happened to me, and many of my friends. Not as bad as not going back to school, because each school is different. But it definitely messed up my schedule the past two semesters. But hey, it is ok and you will get through it. Your not alone, I promise. It may seem like your world is ending, but failing at something just means your going to be ten times better at it the next time, or maybe not but that’s fine too. You just have to find yourself and what works for you. But on the plus side I now have my best friend home for the semester ( so I will have some great stories 🙂 )

I also met up with my old friend Elliot, who I used to work with a long time ago. He really motivated me at the gym, and is a jujitsu fighter so he taught me a couple things. You always need to know how to defend yourself in the city, especially girls remember that. Sadly we only started hanging out towards the end of break, and now I’m back at school. But who knows there might even be a little love interest there:) You’ll find out soon, keep reading!

I even made some money over break. I worked like crazy, because we all know back to school can be expensive. ( the picture only has about 9 dollars in it haha). But I made more then that trust me. All and all I had a great winter break, with lots of laughter, adventures, and great memories. I’m going to miss everyone back home but I’ll be home. It’s never the same though ,once I’m back at school… But this semester hold a lot of crazy adventures and actives ,so stay tuned!
