Back to FIT Tips

fit banner

Hi everyone,

Yes, the anticipation is almost over. School is right around the corner and there is so much to look forward to! FIT is top-ranked, creative and so much fun to be a part of. With that said, there are also things to keep in mind as you prepare for your departure.

  1. Pack Early: The last thing you want to do the week before you go back to school is stress about school! Run errands (food, clothes, school supplies) now more than later, set aside personal items you are planning to take with you for the fall and organize your stuff in a compact and orderly fashion — you won’t be sorry. That way, you can enjoy the last week of summer.
  2. Prioritize Funds: Groceries won’t be a concern to freshman with required meal plans, but returning students/transfer students should set aside some money for necessities like food shopping. For all students: specific funds for school supplies (especially if you are in the design school), textbooks, etc. would be in your best interest to plan ahead.
  3.  Don’t Buy Your Textbooks: Yes, some classes you will require students to have the class textbook, but other classes won’t even crack it open. Ask your professor the first day of class to rule this out. Although it is highly encouraged, you don’t always need it (plus, you’ll save hundreds of dollars!)

Hottest Cuts and Chops – Trendy Hairstyles for B-2-School

As a Puerto Rican guy with super curly hair, keeping my hair on trend can be quite difficult. As I am debating to dye my hair before starting school, I decided to help any of you debating to switch it up for back to school. Here are some trendy chops for for the fall!

  1. “The Cut” Bob – a centre-parted angled cut that remains layer-less and shapes the cheekbones with its flattering frame.

2. Textured Layers – a summer/fall classic, the best look for flaunting your long locks and spicing it up with textured layers. Layers will help frame the face and offer your hair that lively boost. They’ll also give off the illusion of more fullness.

3. Bangs – Thick, yet wispy, brow-grazing look gives way for a bold statement for everyone to gag on.

4. Natural Geometric – For a natural look, it’s all about getting a cut to create shape within your hair. The key is allowing your hair to be heavy on top and structured, yet bouncy on the bottom.

5. Bleach Boy – A look for the guys, bleaching has been in the last couple of months, start of the year with a eye-catching look – great with any hair type.

6. Slicked – Keep things simple with a shiny slicked-back look or add dimension with fifties partings that will register edgy and voluminous.

Looking for the right look can be difficult, but always remember to be true to yourself!

Hiking Towards a New School Year

As summer comes to an end, and my time back in California is up – I decided to really appreciate the great outdoors by taking a nice hike not far from my house in the mountains of Southern California.

Know for it’s beautiful creek and waterfall, I hiked up the North Etiwanda Preserve located in Rancho Cucamonga, California. The about an hour hike brought me closer to nature and realization beginning a new school year.

Sometimes you may feel discouraged starting a new school year, but what you do for yourself today will improve all of your tomorrows. If you want something more than anything in the world, YOU CAN do it.

As I reached the top of the mountain, where the water fall rushed down I thought about letting go of all doubts. Strength doesn’t come from what you can do, it comes from overcoming the things you once couldn’t.

I’m challenging YOU (and myself) to stop wishing and start doing! This school year I want to learn everyday and allow the space between where I am and where I want to go to motivate and not terrify me. Let’s climb to the top of the mountain… (well in New York) let’s run up the stairs to the rooftop of the skyscraper!

Can’t wait for this semester! If you are a new reader, my name is Mariano, feel free to read my short about me by clicking THIS link!

Last First Day

Hello readers!!

It is so great to be back writing for the FIT Admissions Blog after a wonderful summer. What did I do you ask? Worked, worked, vacationed, and worked some more! And I enjoyed every second of it.

How was your summer? Did anyone make a trip to FIT? Take classes? Vacation somewhere cool?

Throughout the summer, at various family events, I would be asked, “So, you’re entering your senior year, huh?”

To which I smiled and reply, “Yeahhh, I can’t believe it’s finally here, but I’m ready.”

(But seriously, wasn’t it just yesterday that I was a freshman moving into Coed dorm?!?! Where does time go??)

There was no sarcasm, no lying behind a smile. I am ready for my senior year, and excited as ever. And I credit FIT for that. Each year as a returning student, you feel more and more prepared for what’s yet to come. What else FIT’s courses, professors and classmates have to offer you; what other adventures New York City has in store. You look back on the experiences and knowledge you’ve gained the year before and apply it to the road ahead.

Of course a small part of me is nervous of what’s to come 9 months from now, after I walk across the stage at graduation. But I choose to be excited rather than nervous. At this point, that’s all I can do. I’m not going to waste my energy fearing the “real world.” With the connections I’ve made while at FIT, I am confident I will be well equipped when entering the work force. For now, I will work hard, have fun, enjoy my senior year and the rest will fall into place.

So, as I walked back onto 27th street on my last first day of school, I was overwhelmed with a sense of nostalgia and familiarity. I felt back at home. I know this block, I know this campus. I know which water fountain’s the coldest, which classroom has the best view. Which corner I like to sit in and read my book in between classes, which computer lab is usually busiest. I was back in my flow.

I was shocked at how many new faces there were, now that I’m the “big man on campus” aka a Senior. The freshman look so young! Did I look that nervous on my first day? (The answer is yes)

In the sea of fresh-faced freshman, I found my fellow senior friends. We hugged, laughed, caught up on each other’s lives. I could see the comfort and sense of “home” in their eyes that only comes with time at FIT. First days aren’t as scary when you know your way around, and you’ve got friends by your side. We’ve made it three years together at this school and we’ll make it through this last year. Nothing can stop us now!

Get ready for a great year readers and fellow students! Please comment any questions or requests on blog posts you’d like me to look into!

xx,

Brendan
