Graduation Stress:

For myself and many other FIT students, the next few months are going to be a whirlwind of emotions and to-do lists. Graduation, the next milestone in life, is in May at we are all freaking out extremely excited. Like other milestones in life, graduation can bring with it a lot of stress.

Here’s some advice I think is really good for keeping me calm as we near the day of cap tossing…

Explore different career and graduate school options and to utilize campus resources preparing students for graduation and a future career. Even if you might not have realized all the resources available to you.

Assess what’s important to you –  including skills, interests and values. Learn about or to research different careers so that you are making informed decisions about things that might be a good fit for those skills and interests.

Time management is crucial. Write a pre-graduation to-do list and start working on different tasks gradually, then check them off. The first step is to register for graduation (and know deadlines in general), and the next tasks all depends on your goal. Just remember to not overwhelm yourself with all these expectations at once. Think of what you want to do most and what would be best for you, not what everyone else expects.

At the same time, be realistic. Of course you need to find some way to support yourself after college, so start considering your options now and plan ahead. You might not get your dream job right away, and that’s OK!

FIT Job Fair

Hey Everyone,

This being my last semester of college, graduation is on my mind- with graduation comes the ever-so-fun job search. In the upcoming weeks, FIT’s Career and Internship Center is hosting an event for both students and alumni. On March 15th from 11am-2:30pm in the John Reeves Great Hall, there will be a jobs fair for available job and internship positions. A variety of companies are attending the fair, and are looking for current and graduate FIT students.

While this is a special event, the Career and Internship Center is open weekly, Monday-Friday from 9am to 5pm. The center offers a variety of services to students, alumni, and even industry employers. Students may use the center in order to find an internship or job on their own time. They may even meet with the counselors to seek advisement, work on a resume, or help discover career goals.
The Career and Internship Center provides a job database for alumni, as well as a lifetime of job support and access to career counseling. Counseling can help with anything from resumes, to interview preparation, to career and freelance positions. Career counseling is available as both an appointment or walk-in. The walk in hours for Spring 2018 are as listed below:

Mondays, 2:30 – 4 pm
Tuesdays, 11 am – 2 pm
Wednesdays, 10:30 – Noon
Thursdays, 11 am – 2 pm

I hope this information helps anyone who is looking for a job or internship opportunity. It is always a great idea to take advantage of the helpful services that FIT has to offer!

Best of luck,
Annmarie X

Global Perspective: Business & Manufacturing

Howdy every one! We’re back in the flow of things almost a month into the second semester and I’m excited to share new experiences with you. Lots will be going on for me this semester, such as finishing up my Associate’s degree, working in my first internship, and just getting my life together in general. Right before we departed for Winter break, I wrote a post about fashion news sources. I am here to continue that series step by step, and I’m happy to say that the next source is WRAP.

Fashion News Source: #2

WRAP

Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production (WRAP) is the largest global sewn products manufacturing accreditation program in the world. It is a team of independent, objective, non-profit workers located around the world to ensure lawful, humane, and ethical manufacturing. They are a huge deal, and when it comes to apparel, working with any WRAP accredited facility is a great way to ensure ethical standards. WRAP sends out weekly newsletters which anyone can subscribe to. They cover what facilities WRAP has certified within the week and extensive content about what the global manufacturing market is up to. It gives summaries of major events country by country so that you can have a big picture view of how the industry might be moving.

It does take some interpretation and deep thinking to understand how some of these events might be directly relevant, but trust me, from a source like WRAP, this information is invaluable.

Treat Yourself: Bryant Park Winter Village

Hey Guys,

Have you ever heard of the Winter Village at Bryant Park? With finals season in full swing and the holidays around the corner, it is important to take a minute to enjoy the season! The Winter Village is one of my favorite places to go to during the holiday season. The park is usually less congested than the Rockefeller Center tree, and showcases a tree of its own.

It is easy to make a night of fun at Bryant Park. At the center of the Winter Village there is a large ice rink. Spend time skating the rink with friends or (like me) sit this one out and enjoy some cocoa instead. Surrounding the rink are various vendors, restaurants, and of course, the tree! Vendors like Max Brenner (and their delicious, liquid gold hot chocolate) are all around the rink. Enjoy eats from around Manhattan, such as Wafels and Dinges, Home Frite, Domo Taco, Doughnuttery and more! Need to get some holiday shopping done? Bryant Park has a gift for every person in your life. The vendors range from apparel to jewelry, to even artwork! There are so many unique gifts to check out, and a ton of ornament shops as well. My favorite thing to do at Bryant Park is grab some cocoa and look through the shops. I always love looking at the different ornaments and stopping at all the art vendors. Do not forget to take a seat and watch the skaters, or snap a pic in front of the tree! Bryant Park Winter Village is open from October 28, 2017 to January 2, 2018. Be sure to grab a winter treat and check it out!

Goodbye Stress

Hello Everyone,

With midterm season almost at a finish (thank goodness), it is never too soon to get a head start preparing for finals. There are simple steps you can take to reduce stress and keep calm this finals season.

Meditate-
Always give yourself room to breathe. It is important to set aside time for yourself to relax and wind down. Mediation can mean literally practicing breathing exercises, or simply allowing downtime to center your mind and body. There are even apps that help schedule a few minute long meditation exercises into your day. It is a simple way to stay calm, cool, and collected.

Time Manage-
Set up a calendar with your due dates for assignments and exams. Give yourself time to chip away at your work week by week. The less pressure you’re under, the more successfully you can perform! Beat procrastination before it can even become an issue.

Communicate-
If you are struggling, whether inside or outside of school, never be afraid to reach out. FIT has free Counseling Services for any full-time student who has personal or academic concerns. Communication is important, especial during high-stress situations. No problem is too big to too small to reach out.

Health is Wealth-
Being conscious of what you put into your body can make you feel better in the long run; fuel your body on healthy, clean food whenever you have the opportunity. Even spending an hour in the gym is a great stress relief to let you mind unwind. The better you are to your body, the better you will feel mentally! However… there is nothing wrong with treating yourself every so often . Which brings me to…

Treat Your Self!-
Every now and then, you deserve to treat yourself. Take an hour or two and watch that Netflix movie you haven’t gotten to watch yet. Meet up with friends for dinner. Have a cookie. You deserve to enjoy the simple pleasures of life!

I hope these tips help decrease stress as final season approaches in the near future. Never forget to take care of YOU.

Best,
Annmarie
