We all dream of a white Christmas, however, snow in the Big Apple makes life a little crazier. Just a few inches of snow brings out the snow boots and over-sized coats. Here are a few tips to get through the winter while at school:
■ Dress in Layers:Let’s be honest, layers rule during the winter. Loose fitting clothing trap the body’s natural warmth, and do it best with an insulating inner layer and an outer layer resistant to wind and water. The less body area exposed, the warmer you’ll be.
■ Monitor Your Health: Stay well hydrated and well nourished, and wash your hands often. Prevent serious infections by getting an annual flu shot. Keep your skin glowing by staying moisturized.
■ Prepare Your Room: When it’s cold out, the dorms stay warm. A/C is switched to warmer air, and depending on how your room is set up some parts of your room may be a different temperature. Keep throw blankets and comforters on hand!
■ Stay ahead of classes: With unpredictable weather, sometimes the snow gets the best of the city. Snow days are inevitable, so stay on top of your class work just in the worst case scenario things get moved up/back that are unexpected!
When living in New York, it’s important to stay informed and aware when a rare threat is upon the city. Most often, the threat involves Mother Nature herself. FIT provides a wonderful service for all students and employees called FIT Alert. This system sends out emergency messages to employees and students via emails, text messages and/or phone calls.
Such messages include alerts about extreme weather, fire or flood conditions, violence on campus or public health emergencies. Living in the digital age, we are never without our smart phones. This service allows you to stay informed about what’s happening in regards to FIT and NYC during stressful times, whenever and wherever.
Winter time in New York can be a monster! School cancellations due to weather are always texted and emailed to me, so I’m informed immediately. I also know that my parents receive texts or phone messages letting them know as well, so that your family stays in the loop!
It’s simple and easy to review your information in the alert system through MyFIT. You can specify which numbers you want the messages sent to and add more numbers if needed. Parents and spouses can’t enroll in the programs themselves, but can have their numbers added by the student.

I don’t know if I’ve ever been more eager for a vacation…
It is finally Spring Break here at FIT! Last weekend, Students quickly began filing out of the dorms with their suitcases packed and a smile on their face. I don’t think it’s just me – everyone’s brains are fried. Especially after this depressing winter that’s lasted WAY too long, we need some time off. Preferably in a tropical climate.
I went upstate Friday night for a few days to start of my Spring Break. Mother Nature was in a FABULOUS mood on Saturday. It was about 75 degrees! My ginger skin sizzled in the sun but I was not complaining at all. The weekend felt like summer and my mind, body and soul were all so confused. It’s like we skipped spring and went straight to June.
And THEN Mother Nature being the moody b-word that she is decided to start snowing Tuesday night. REALLY?! You’re gonna act like that Mother Nature after what you just gifted us with?! I was almost in tears…but one thing was getting me through…
I’M GOING TO CALIFORNIA FOR A WEEK!
Yes, that’s right!. Tomorrow I’m leaving for California with some of my best friends! I have never been to California or the west coast. This trip is falling at the most perfect time – right before my last month of school. I will be able to get all of my pent up energy out in time for finals. (Ugh.)
But finals brings summer..and summer brings happy Brendan 🙂
