Art and Design: Student Show

Hello Everyone,

From May 9th-May 24th, the Museum at FIT is hosting the Graduating Student Show. This exhibition houses student work from 16 different majors: Accessories Design, Advertising Design, Computer Animation and Interactive Media, Fabric Styling, Fashion Design, Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Illustration, Interior Design, Jewelry Design, Menswear, Packaging Design, Photography, Textile Surface Design, Toy Design, Visual Presentation and Exhibition Design. There is work displayed from 800 different graduating students in the Art and Design School.
The diverse projects feature thesis projects, award winning projects, juried work, and more. What is amazing about the student work is there are so many different niches and disciplines to explore. Students have created anything ranging from an entire toy design, to a piece of jewelry, to a video game, to an illustrative work and more.
My graduating department, Illustration, contributed to the show. At the Museum at FIT’s lower level, there are wall displays of BFA students’ Illustration work. Illustration students display their discipline through painting, drawing, digital work, and more. The work goes just beyond wall pieces; students illustrated books, made fashion items, costumes, 3D pieces/sculptures, and more. The exhibitions are on display at the Museum at FIT, the John E. Reeves Great Hall, and other locations on campus. Be sure to visit for details!

Until Next Time,

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

I hope you all had a happy and healthy holiday with your loved ones. What makes art so incredible is that there are so many different purposes for creating. Whether it be work for clientele, personal satisfaction, or work to raise awareness, art has the power to be extremely impactful. The Illustration Department at FIT recently created artwork to raise crucial awareness about the state of the planet’s climate, specifically the ocean’s. The Ocean Climate Conference at U.N. (from June 5th-9th) focused on ways to “conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.” Their goal is to improve the condition of the ocean for not only the people, but for the planet and its lifespan.

Emi Anderson (displayed below) worked on a project to specifically raise awareness about plastic pollution in the oceans of our planet. Her project was presented at the conference. The image portrays a woman holding a whale underwater, with pollution scattered in the atmosphere around her.

Others student work was displayed at the German Missions in the United States on the United Nations Plaza. The two students are  Julia Rios and Rachel Lim, students of the Illustration Department. The exhibition was apart of a much larger exhibition, the Green Bauhaus Communications Project, where ten posters from FIT (the only school representing the U.S.) were a part of the 300 displayed in the show. You can read more about the displayed artwork here. There are images of some of the other artwork displayed as well! It is incredible to see students create artwork that portrays such a meaningful message.

Until Next Time,

Fire & Ice Exhibition

IMG_1477-2

Hello!

I just wanted to come here and let you guys know that currently all graduating AAS fashion design students are having an exhibition of their semester work inspired by “Fire & Ice”. I went there yesterday to see my roommates work and was blown away by some of the things I saw. I definitely recommend you checking it out if you have a few minutes to spare. I find it so interesting to see what students come up with and how they bring it to life.

The exhibition is open from April 27 to May 1, 2016 from 9 am-9 pm. It’s located in the John E. Reeves Great Hall.

Let me know in the comments below if you went and what you thought of it!

It’s Senior Showtime!

There is less than one month left in the school year, so it’s that time again; the time when all the graduating students work is put on display. It can catch some people off guard as the displays go up intermittently around the school, and as everyone is so focused on finishing up their own projects, but when you finally stop to look at all of them it is really inspiring. Over 800 students are represented from both the AAS and BFA programs. To see where each major will be located click here! Just another reason to come to FIT to check out the school.

Most Art & Design majors have their work displayed throughout the school as well as a “senior show” where industry professionals along with friends and family can see a collection of work that was created over our time here.

The most famous “senior show” is the bachelor’s Fashion Design show. It is attended by lots of influential industry people, as well as the designer critics who worked with all of the students. This year’s is happening this Thursday (4/30/15) and can be livestreamed! I saw the presentation of all the work in the Great Hall a few weeks ago, and couldn’t be more proud of my peers who did the AAS with me! Definitely watch the show to see the critics and people’s choice winners work the runway.

My major (Fabric Styling) has one wall that the entire major works together to create. It’s a huge undertaking, but is a nice way to show the work of the entire group as one piece. We also have a senior show coming up (along with the Textile/Surface Design kids) where we each get a table to display our portfolios and any other work we have done. I’m hoping lots of people show up!

Student Exhibitions

Hey guys, sorry I’ve been AWOL but moving back home for the holidays is one lengthy process (specially when you only have two suitcases to pack your entire life).

One thing I really love about FIT is that your work gets showcased throughout school (yep, we get to show off how amazing we are ALL the time).  Countless hours, sleepless nights and all that effort you put into creating that final piece or project takes center stage during the last weeks of the semester. Even though FIT is always dressed up in our incredible students works of art at the end of every semester the School of Art and Design puts up several exhibits open to the public (where you can completely brag about your awesome invention).

This time I visited the Fashion Design AAS Exhibition Inspired by the American Folk Art Museum, which was up for four days at FIT’s John E. Reeves Great Hall. Unfortunately we weren’t able to take pictures (even though I sneaked a few shots, in respect to others work I decided not to post them) but I found a teaser video by Prof. Michael Cokkinos of the Advertising and Marketing Department at FIT. Click here to watch.

Carpe Diem, (even if it means having to jump three times on your suitcase before closing it, due to holiday shopping)
