Myths of FIT

FIT is not your typical college by any means.  Located in the heart of Manhattan, FIT is far from your usual college experience.  I’m here to clarify and dispel any FIT myths that are out there!

Myth #1: FIT doesn’t have sports
This is far from true!  FIT has 15 sports teams (6 men, 8 women, 1 coed) and we are a part of the NJCAA Division III Conference.

Myth #2: FIT doesn’t offer housing
FIT has 4 residence halls, 3 of which are located right on 27th St. The dorms located on 27th St are for new students and the dorm located on 31st St and 10th Ave is for returning students.

Myth #3: Classes can be 3 hours long
This is actually very true!  As an art and design major, I have had classes that range between 2 hours to 8 hours long.  It is more common that classes will only meet once a week, which is preferable with the amount of coursework that we have.

Myth #4: FIT is basically an all girls school
While the demographic is predominantly female at 85%, more and more males are coming to FIT every single year!  Our male population is rapidly growing here at FIT.

Myth #5: FIT is a fashion school
Our most popular majors are Fashion Design, Fashion Business Management, and Advertising and Marketing Communications.  Some of the coursework included in even our most popular majors can be unrelated to fashion.  There is a fashion focus, but we offer majors such as Toy Design, Photography, Entrepreneurship, and Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing.  For example, you don’t have to shoot fashion in order to be a photography major at FIT!

I hope this helped to dispel the popular misconceptions about FIT!
