NYC Food Truck Fest

Hello there! Hope you all had a great week. Midterms are slowly starting to creep up on us, and that means sleepless nights, lots of coffee and stress. And those combined is a recipe for disaster. That’s why we shouldn’t forget to enjoy ourselves and take a break once in a while too. A suggestion for something to do this weekend is the NYC Food Truck Fest.

If you love food, shopping and discovering local artists, you’ll enjoy the NYC Food Truck Fest. It’s basically a huge market on the Upper West Side, with tons of small vendors selling one-of-a-kind goods, and let’s not forget the 12 gourmet food trucks. The event is on Sunday, March 12th, from 10:00 am – 5:30 pm. Location is Grand Bazaar NYC, 100 West 77th Street. Admission is free, but you can donate. 100% of Grand Bazaar NYC’s profits are donated to four local public schools.

Who’s coming: Luke’s Lobster, The Empanada Sonata, Stuf’d truck, Neapolitan Express, Gorilla Cheese NYC, Carl’s Steaks, Sweet Chilli NYC, Mac Truck, Souvlaki GR, Big D’s Grub Truck, Yankee Doodle Dandy, Crepe Crew & Crepe Truck.

Finals Tips & Tricks

It’s the most wonderful time of the year….FINALS!  This isn’t the most exciting or least stressful part of the year, however it is a time where you can look back and appreciate how much you have learned in a single semester.  Before you panic, take a moment to appreciate that you have gotten this far in your education!  Being enrolled in college is a huge accomplishment and you should be very proud.  In dealing with finals, it is best to take a calm approach.  Panicking, stressing, and cramming will not do you any good, so hopefully by the time you are reading this, you are at a point where you can prepare in advance!

  • Don’t wait until the review.  The final exam review is typically 1 week before the exam, which doesn’t leave you much time to study among all of your other classes, projects, and assignments.  If you write out a study guide or key topics that you discussed in class prior to the review, it will help to refresh your memory and help guide you for the exam prep.  We often forget the information that we learned during week 1, so try your best to review those old notes.
  • Take study breaks.  If you begin studying in advance, you will allow more time to gradually learn and absorb all of the information.  With that, you should allow yourself to take a break from studying to go get ice cream, take a shower, order dinner, or watch an episode of television.
  • Put your phone volume on, but put it across the room.  It may sound ridiculous to keep your phone volume on, but I’ve noticed that I always want to check my phone to see if I got any notifications.  By turning your volume on, you’ll know when someone is trying to reach you rather than constantly being worried if you missed a text or call by having it on silent.
  • Study with friends.  Like all successful business partnerships, your partner will usually possess skills that you do not have.  The same thing applies to study partners.  They may understand a section that you need extra help on and the same can be said vice versa.  By teaching a topic, you are also helping yourself reassure your knowledge and awareness on the topic.

Happy studying!

Feel Less Stressed

Hey guys!

As you are all aware of the semester is coming to an end and test, presentations and papers are starting to pile up. This means we are all starting to feel overwhelmed and stressed. I read an article the other day on Refinery that talked about how to deal with stress and I thought it would be relevant to give you some tips on how to feel less stressed during these last couple of weeks leading to finals…

Get Organized! First thing you want to do is make a written plan of everything that you have due for the next few weeks. Trust me writing things down makes everything look less overwhelming and makes it feel much more manageable.

Don’t Procrastinate! Don’t wait till the last minute to start things, because it only makes you feel more stressed about deadlines. You want to feel in control and on top of things!

Take a Break! It’s good to study for hours, but don’t overdo it! If you can’t memorize terms anymore, it probably means you need to take a break. Just a 10 minute break, can really make a difference in your studying abilities.

Sleep! Get a good night’s sleep. It’s going to help you tackle the next day much more easily. If you feel good and awake, you can do anything. You just have to find the motivation! Having your body and mind well rested will really have a positive impact on your work and grades.

Do yoga (lol). Go outside take some air, refresh your mind. It’s really important to go out, trust me staying inside all day can drive you crazy. You need to change scenery and move a little.

Good luck!

Midterm March Madness

If you are currently a student at FIT, you may be in severe panic mode.  It’s about 2 weeks until spring break which only means one thing…midterms.  The beautiful, yet horrifying time of the semester where we all lose sleep and our patience.  If you are reading this 2 weeks before spring break, then you are still able to properly plan!  Midterms don’t have to be a week of craziness and all-nighters if you make a proper schedule in advanced!  Here are some of my tips to surviving midterms:

  • Look at a calendar. While this may seem ridiculous, you’d be surprised at how little or how much you know your schedule and when your professor is giving you a midterm.  If you are an art and design student, you have a project due on a certain day or an exam on the other. Some professors may offer their midterm after break, but you’ll never be able to relieve any stress until you look at a calendar and write everything down!
  • Establish a schedule. Once you have written everything out, focus on the midterm that comes first and then the one that you’re most nervous about.  From there, make a study or work schedule to break apart the materials you’ve learned in the past 6 weeks.  Don’t try to cram a semester’s worth of material in a few days.  If you break up your studying and material days, it’ll make everything go much smoother.
  • Plan that reward. Everything must come to an end, which means that you will SURVIVE midterms!  Decide on a special treat that you’ve been wanting to treat yourself to the entire semester.  Whether you’re going to get a pedicure or the insane milkshakes from Black Tap, you deserve that indulgence!
  • Breathe.

Best of luck!

It’s Senior Showtime!

There is less than one month left in the school year, so it’s that time again; the time when all the graduating students work is put on display. It can catch some people off guard as the displays go up intermittently around the school, and as everyone is so focused on finishing up their own projects, but when you finally stop to look at all of them it is really inspiring. Over 800 students are represented from both the AAS and BFA programs. To see where each major will be located click here! Just another reason to come to FIT to check out the school.

Most Art & Design majors have their work displayed throughout the school as well as a “senior show” where industry professionals along with friends and family can see a collection of work that was created over our time here.

The most famous “senior show” is the bachelor’s Fashion Design show. It is attended by lots of influential industry people, as well as the designer critics who worked with all of the students. This year’s is happening this Thursday (4/30/15) and can be livestreamed! I saw the presentation of all the work in the Great Hall a few weeks ago, and couldn’t be more proud of my peers who did the AAS with me! Definitely watch the show to see the critics and people’s choice winners work the runway.

My major (Fabric Styling) has one wall that the entire major works together to create. It’s a huge undertaking, but is a nice way to show the work of the entire group as one piece. We also have a senior show coming up (along with the Textile/Surface Design kids) where we each get a table to display our portfolios and any other work we have done. I’m hoping lots of people show up!
