Back to School: Course Highlight

Well, hello there Blogosphere! Remember me? 🙂 It feels good to be back and writing for the FIT Admissions Blog. It’s almost been a full year, can you believe it?

School has swung back into session, almost like we never left. Students have refilled every crevice of FIT’s campus and the spirit of a new school year is among us. In between classes, the quad is covered with students basking in the warm sun of September’s indian summer. Friends perch on the ledges surrounding each building, as they laugh and reconnect over their lunches. There’s a wonderful energy to campus at the beginning of Fall semester. Excitement, passion and creativity – qualities of each FIT student that kickstart the semester.

I personally feel wonderful being back in the city and on campus again. I am now a college Junior (what?!?) beginning my bachelor’s program in Advertising and Marketing Communications. Which means I now have an Associates degree in Advertising and Marketing. I feel super cool being able to say that 😉 I’m excited for these next two years at FIT and what it has in store for me.

With new semester’s come new courses, DUH! Moreover, with a new program comes new courses. Some student’s decide to try a new major when they enter their bachelor program. However, I’ve really enjoyed my major over the past two years. The courses that are offered in the bachelors program really excite me! For today’s post I’m going to focus on one of the courses that I’m very much looking forward to this semester – Video Studio Production.

You may be thinking, “but he’s a marketing major, why is he learning how to be a camera operator?” Well, it takes more than a camera operator to produce a television show. In this course we learn professional studio techniques for video, journalism and communications. We learn to understand what it takes to put on a show not only behind the cameras, but in front of the cameras as well as in the control room.

I’ve actually be interested in the “behind the scenes” of television production as a career for awhile and this class is the perfect introduction. FIT actually has a state of the art TV studio and control room in the A building, and those two rooms are my classroom! The TV studio has three cameras, a set, proper lighting and everything a legit studio would have. The control room does exactly what it says, controls what’s going on in the studio. It’s complete with multiple monitors, sound boards and computer systems.

I’ve had three classes so far, and in each one different students are able to take on different roles. For example, one class I was the Technical Director, camera operator and director and in another class I was the host of our mock talk show. Working my way from behind camera to in front! It’s very interesting to me to learn how talk shows are made (obviously on a much smaller scale and less pressure.) This semester we will be producing and filming a talk show, an instructional video and a PSA! With each project, the students in the group will be able to rotate roles so that we can learn different aspects of the process.

This class is different from others I’ve taken here at FIT because we’re not just sitting listening to a professor for 3 hours. It’s very hands on and exciting, and the perfect start to my Monday morning. I am able to see a different avenue that my major could take me down and it’s very informing.

Sometimes when we’re in the midst of a program, we may have our sights set on one specific job. Or we may have no idea what we want to focus on. The great thing about FIT, and my major specifically, is that it covers all bases. When you leave a course at the end of a semester, you’re able to check one more aspect of your industry off your imaginary list. I’m definitely learning where my skills could be applied in the future job market. I personally like to see where my major is applicable in the real world because I’m still not certain what industry I will enter after I graduate. I know I’m not the only one!!

I can’t wait to update you readers on this class as it progresses this semester! I hope you all have had as a successful back to school as I have. Go out and enjoy this beautiful weather!! Finally feeling like fall 🙂

xx, Brendan

On my Mind: One blog to another

The best way to keep up to date with what is happening back at FIT is to constantly check our college’s website. At a simple glance this page seems to always be the same but when you look closely at the column on your right, under announcements, you can see updates about our school. My top pick from this week is the new FIT blog “On My Mind” by the one and only President Joyce F. Brown. This woman, Dr. Brown is an amazing and highly educated person with incredibly interesting and useful information to share with us (obviously like me haha, so don’t ditch this blog). The topics on this trending blog range from Education, Industry to Curriculum and more. This superwoman that is present at every FIT event I have attended has been blogging since May. For those of you who want to know more in-depth about her exemplary achievements should read through the About the President section.

A few insider things I know from attending FIT for the past three and a half years is that she lives on campus, the whole top floor of alumni belongs to her and her family (they own the cutest most fashionable pup), when you get to ride on the elevator with her you don’t have to stop at any other floor (feels like royalty), and she is very avid on sustainability and making FIT the best place possible. Reading through her blog, I noticed she went ahead and wrote about one of my future topics so I’m quite sure great minds think alike; learn more about our Green Roofs.

One very exciting news I also discovered was that FIT has a new Sustainability and Ethics minor! I’m very ecstatic (and incredibly angry that its right when I’m graduating) that there is a need in our industry to rethink and open up the sustainability conversation. I invite you all to reconsider what have been the norms for the fashion industry and what they can be. This ted talks video will have you craving for change in every single aspect on the way how we do business: CSR 3.0.

Carpe Diem,

Sadie

Notes From The 6 Train: Talkin To Da Bomb’

(Okay, please excuse the terrible name of this post it’s nearing finals and we all need some humor in our life). I did, however meet the editor in chief of Fashion Bomb Daily, Claire Sulmers. Fashion Bomb Daily is a blog directed towards the multicultural fashionista highlighting style and trends sported by celebrities of color. The Fashion Bomb Daily gets over 2.4 million hits monthly, and Claire Sulmers has been been a guest at 106 & Park on BET, featured in Time, Glamour, shot an ad for Covergirl, and is contributor to Essence & Vogue.it. Her list of appearances, accomplishments and awards is much longer than the brief listing I’ve posted here, click the link posted at the bottom of the post to see what else Claire’s up to!

She spoke briefly about the ongoing battle concerning the lack of inclusion in the fashion industry. (I’ve written about the lack of diversity on the runway, luxury brands, and top executives in general, etc. in other posts if you want to check it out). It feel good hearing what other people in the industry are doing to abolish this reality, so we can create a new one in which are fabulous people are recognized in fashion, no matter the race.

Claire also spoke about challenges she faced while breaking into the business. She was a storyteller, giving us small fashion vignettes, ranging from her time in in Paris while interning at French Vogue and nearly living on the streets, to how she became friendly with Anna Wintour. Hearing her success story, fueled by unadulterated passion and dedication was welcomed by all, especially the graduating seniors, who like to hear reaffirming stories. She was such a sweetheart and I am so glad that my 2 o’clock was canceled, so that I could stay and just chit chat with her a bit.

Also, here’s a bit of sidebar. After we took the photo posted above, she sent it to her sister, who happens to be an old classmate and former captain of my high school dance team (in Atlanta, GA, nonetheless), saw it and contacted me via FB. This is the exact reason I always talk about being kind to people, you never know how we are all connected. Granted, this doesn’t guarantee a job for me (though I did give her my resume, as all well prepared FIT students have resumes on them), however, if I treated her sister terribly years ago while in high school and she told her, that would probably guarantee that I wouldn’t any type of job or internship.. Just a bit of food for thought for you all. Below I have posted a link to The Fashion Bomb Daily website, check it out!

O Christmas Tree

And just like that…I’m back in upstate New York, and this past semester was all a dream…

Just kidding! However, I might as well fallen asleep in September and woken up this week because where did the time go?! I’m currently writing from my couch in Saratoga, New York. I’m surrounded by blankets, cable TV, yummy food, and the most festive Christmas decorations. I made it through all of my finals, alive and unharmed! Tell me that two weeks ago and I would have thought you were crazy, I felt there was no end in sight. But I must say it feels pretty darn good to have finished this semester strong.

Being home for winter break is different than any other, because who doesn’t look forward to being home for the holidays?! All of your friends slowly but surely make their way home from school and you can’t wait to hear all of their stories. There’s an urge to gather with your friends and family, and celebrate the spirit of the season together! I am so excited to be reunited with some of my long time friends, and like always it seems as if we just saw each other yesterday.

There was one thing I had to do before I travelled back upstate…I had to see the tree. No, not some random tree in Central Park, but the majestic Christmas Tree in Rockefeller Center. Now I know many New Yorkers are probably over the hype of this annual tree, but I’m still pretty fresh to the city and I don’t think I’ve said it enough but I LOVE CHRISTMAS!

Last night a few friends and I bundled up and started the journey to 49th street to see the main attraction. I saw the tree last year for my first time in years, and to be honest I couldn’t see much of a difference in this years tree BUT I still was in awe. Immediately when you turn the corner and see the gigantic, twinkling tree – it takes your breath away! After taking multiple pictures at different angles of the big beaut, my friends and I stopped to watch the ice skaters beneath the tree. Boy, I could have stayed their for hours. I hate to say it, but I can’t keep myself from laughing when someone falls – it just comes right out! If you want some pure entertainment, spend a few minutes watching the ice skaters at Rock Center!

W O W

But as I was standing there, watching the skaters and appreciating the tree, I felt happy, grateful and proud for the semester I had officially completed earlier that morning. I couldn’t have asked for a better way to end the semester in the city than by seeing that tree. I was given so many opportunities this semester, through the FIT Blog, my internship and my job. I think that Christmas tree brings the best out in people, you could just feel it in the air. However cold it was, everyone had a smile on the face and were with someone they cared about. The joy was infectious.

So as I sit here in my childhood home, looking at our christmas tree, I look forward to a relaxing winter break with my friends and family. It’s always a great time to reboot and prepare to take the city into your hands next semester. I hope my blog doesn’t bore too many these next few weeks, upstate New York is V E R Y boring…big surprise!

I wish you all the happiest of holidays!
