I Made a Jacket!

For my final project in MG 312 – Manufacturing II Process Analysis, I made a lined, full zip, corduroy jacket with two front welt pockets. This was a very involved process as we started from scratch. We took our bodies measurements and made a “body fit” pattern. This was so that we knew exactly what our measurements were so that we always had a place to start from if we wanted to start over. Just getting my body fit pattern just right was difficult. I had little experience in making any type of garment, so it took a few iterations to get my body fit just right.

Once I nailed that, I started patterning the silhouette of my jacket. I sized up my body fit in every direction and started working on prototypes of my final garment. I particularly struggled with patterning my sleeve. This was the first sleeve that I have ever made. Most of the textbook resources that we had in the class were dedicated to women’s wear, so there wasn’t a huge selection of menswear guidance. Even so, some of the textbooks were hard for me to understand with my limited experience, so in the end, I made my sleeve based solely on intuition – it didn’t turn out half bad. It took me roughly 6 failed sleeves to get it sized just right – I still can’t believe pattern makers can make things like sleeves correctly on their first try.

The blue corduroy and black lining that I used in my final garment were provided by my professor Linda Cohen (she’s the absolute best professor at FIT). I had to lay the corduroy in a specific way to make sure that the nap of the fabric was matching, but once I had everything cut and fused, it was time to start sewing. Sewing isn’t particularly complicated but it is definitely time-consuming to get quality seams. It also takes some amount of technical skill to operate the machinery well. It took me the entirety of a week to make my final garment. From finalizing my patterns, cutting my fabric, fusing my fabric, and sewing, I spent roughly 85% of a week in the labs. There was a point where I hadn’t eaten in 27 hours because I stayed up working for so long.

On the last day of class, everyone presented their final garments and told us about their journey through the process. Everyone did an amazing job with their garments, no exceptions. Students made things such as denim jackets, tunics, suit vests, joggers, leather blazers, fur collars, robes, dresses, and even blouses. Once the presentations were over, even our professor told us that we had raised the bar for this project, which was an extremely rewarding thing to hear. This is the last class that I’ll be having with professor Linda Cohen and I can’t explain how thankful I am to have had her for the last two semesters. This class brought all of my fellow classmates together like no class has done before, and I am also thankful for that. Now I’ll have a jacket to wear for Winter that I made!

Exams at PolyU – What’s the Difference?

Hi everyone!

This week was my last exam- my semester is officially over! Now to wait for results and travel a bit before heading back to America. Exams at PolyU are very different than those at FIT- I was surprised how the process works and thought I would compare and contrast the two.

At FIT, professors sometimes give a final project instead of a final exam, or do the final online, but generally the final takes place in the last week of the class meeting. You might get a handout with what to study, or the relevant chapters, but generally it is a cumulative review. Each professor is different however!

At PolyU, the system is a bit different. After 13 weeks of classes, there is one week for “revision,” when you can finish final projects, study for exams and generally take a breather before launching back into school. After that is an exam period in which each class is assigned a time, each block 2 or 3 hours long. For example, my exams were May 2nd 8:45-11:45 and May 6th 3:15-6:15. Multiple tests were administered in the same gym/classroom, which was set up in a similar manner to how the SATs and other standardized tests in America are given. Each desk had a bag underneath in which you stash your bag, and no food or drink is allowed. It is a very strict environment with lots of proctors checking to make sure you are following the guidelines. However, I did enjoy the serious tone and it helped me keep focused.

The past year’s exams are usually posted on the library website, which gives you a chance to practice the style of test to be administered. I found this really helpful, as otherwise I would have had no idea what to expect. Since the final exams count for a large portion of your grade- up to 70% for some classes- having any and all help is great.

It feels good to be all done with exams and ready to travel, but I will miss PolyU. It is strange to think I will never take another class there. It’s almost like having the feeling of graduating twice- once from PolyU now and again next year when I leave FIT.

AAS Exhibition In Florence (Continued)

Hello EVERYONE!

Last week I was kept quite busy finishing up for the AAS Final Exhibition in Florence. On my last post I explained the theme and how we gathered all of our inspiration. From the museum we chose two objects/spaces of the museum that would inspire us for our collections. Since then we have had a few important deadlines along the way! The latest was last Friday, both of our garments were due and needed to be ready for our guest judges coming in to view them throughout the weekend. These judges included some of our professors, museum coordinators, and a very special critic, Mr. Mirko Bottai, textile designer for Pucci.

In total we completed two illustration projects and two final garments! All which are now part of my portfolio.

Along the way we had meetings with Mr. Bottai and our professors to make sure we were making all the right decisions and staying on track between our inspiration and execution of them.

I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to sit down with an industry professional to discuss the projects and listen to their suggestions to enhance my skills.

I will say it was not easy, but definitely eye-opening. To have a glance on the different jobs there is in the fashion industry, and most importantly of the main role a designer plays when it comes to creation and production of a collection.

Next week we have a celebratory ceremony, where we showcase our work in the museum. Open for parents visiting, plus other classmates and professors.

Production Management Semester 4 Review

Alright everyone, now this is a pretty big deal. When you finish your 4th semester, you will be graduating with your AAS. This went by extremely fast for me and shows just how much you have to pay attention and savor the moment, because time really does fly by.

MG 252 – Product Data Management

This class is focuses on identifying all the different types of information in a business environment, where this information comes from, and where it then is directed. Students familiarize themselves with key business documents such as NDAs, project workflows, and 26 other documents, and create samples for their personal use. Final project is breaking down all the data for a sample product and presenting this information.

IC 297 – AAS Internship C: Career Exploration

This course is taken at the same time that you are placed in your Spring credited internship. The main goal of this course is to help students identify their desired career path and to start working towards it through their current internship. Students share personal experiences with their internships to develop a more comprehensive understanding of the opportunities in the industry.

EN 321 – Strategies of Business Communication

Students learn proper business communication etiquette and use this to create job search documents, reports, memos, and customer service documents.

MA 213 – Quantitative Methods

This is a required math class that is fairly basic. Linear algebra is the main focus of this class, with some focus on interest, used to calculate things such as loans. Students create a report using this interest math to calculate what their financial situations would be if they took out loans.

Studying Art History in the Cradle of the Renaissance

HELLO EVERYONE!

A great decision I made before coming to study in Florence was to plan all my classes and required credits I needed accordingly. I sat down with my counselor and spoke with her on the many possibilities in completing all those requirements. One suggestion that she made was to leave art history classes for when I came to Florence. Best decision I have made!

In my first semester spent here I took HA 112- History of Western Art and Civilization: Renaissance to the Modern Era. This course was geared towards religious, political, economic, and social conditions in relation to art, such as paintings, sculpture and architecture. It was very eye-opening and enriching towards learning about European culture, mostly events that happened in Florence!

The second Art History course, which I am currently taking is HA 212- Renaissance Art in Florence. It mainly focuses on paintings, sculpture, and architecture from the fourteenth to seventeenth century. Most of the course has been guided towards some of the major monuments and anything art related in Florence. It has been wonderful! Almost every week we have visited different sites, from churches to museums to piazzas!

All visits have been mesmerizing, we’ve got to see some of the most famous art pieces by important artists. Some of these include: The Trinity by Masaccio, The Statues of David by Donatello & Verrocchio, and of course, one of the biggest monument, the Duomo and Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral.

There is so much art to explore here in Florence since it holds a great amount of the most important works in the world, better yet, it is the cradle of the Renaissance. I definitely recommend, if you are planning to study abroad here, to go for the option of taking these courses here and see all these majestic works in person.
