Makeup Meets Art

Need some inspiration to bring your art work to life?

Alumnus Roger Cabello, FIT ’85, slathers, dollops, swirls, and dabs cosmetics into abstract masterpieces.

The Peruvian-born Photography grad has made a career of shooting all kinds of cosmetics—foundation, lip gloss, shampoo, nail color—in blobs, crumbles, swirls, and smears.

While working for Allure magazine, he perfected the now-ubiquitous style of photographing makeup out of its packaging, highlighting textures and colors so enticing you can’t help wanting to touch it, put it on your face, or maybe even eat it.

In the piece shown above, L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche La Palette Lip was created when Cabello painted the images on the cover.

It was developed by Orrea Light, Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing and Management ’02, Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing ’97, vice president of product development at L’Oréal Paris.

Materials are everywhere — it just takes a true artist to see it.

Recent books by faculty and alumni run the gamut from children’s picture books to an analysis of the way globalization affects emerging markets.

One book called Drawing Blood by Molly Crabapple, Illustration, ’04, is a graphic memoir with a striking cover (shown above.) This story details Crabapple’s coming-of-age and coming into her own as a political artist, illustrating Occupy Wall Street and prisoners at the Guantánamo Bay Detention Camp.

Of Cats and Men

Sam Kalda, Illustration MFA ‘14, makes the case that it’s not just women who love cats with his gorgeously illustrated book, Of Cats and Men, featuring stories, quotes, and delightful drawings of noted cat enthusiasts of the male persuasion.

His subjects include artists, writers, thinkers, and statesmen; cats may be the one thing Ai Weiwei, Mark Twain, Nikola Tesla, and Andy Warhol have in common.

Kalda, whose clients include The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Pentagram, West Elm, and Wired, won the Society of Illustrators gold medal, was on the shortlist for the World Illustration Awards, and was named to CMYK magazine’s “Top 100 New Creatives.”

Congratulations, Sam!

Bee’s at FIT

2017 FIThives-2362

For those who don’t know, FIT has two beehives full of happy bees.

This past April, 2 beehives were installed on Earth Day, located on the green roof between the Goodman and Pomerantz buildings. FIT students were a tremendous help in this process― along with Suzanne McGillicuddy, assistant dean of students and co-chair, FIT’s Sustainability Council.

The goal of the Hives project is to foster education across numerous disciplines about bees and their role in the environment, to educate FIT students about the importance of bees and the fields FIT serves, and to contribute to the city’s bee population.

Three months in, the number of bees has increased significantly, which means they are thriving in their new home. Honey is already being produced, which usually takes a new hive approximately a year, McGillicuddy said. With the High Line and Madison Square Park in the area, among other areas, the bees will flourish and sustain their two hives beautifully.

With the High Line and Madison Square Park in the area, among other areas, the bees will continue to flourish and sustain their two hives beautifully.
