5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Applying

Applying to any university can be absolutely terrifying.  From the deadlines, fees, essay questions, and portfolio submissions (Art & Design only), you’ve got a whole lot on your plate!  Here are some tips that I wish someone would have told me prior to applying to FIT or any university:

  1. Your most recent work may not be your best work.
This applies to art and design students only, but sometimes the work that you created last minute for your portfolio submission may not be the best work that you’ve ever done.  It is best to take time and start your portfolio compilation early so that you can execute your craft to your full potential.
  2. Choose a school that is best for YOU.
While this may be self explanatory, don’t choose a school that you FEEL like you should go to based on your friends and comfort.  Choose a school that speaks to you and feels right for your career, academic, and lifestyle goals.  College is the time to find yourself and go outside of your comfort zone.  Don’t settle!
  3. Start early.
You may have already heard this from your parents and I’m sure you don’t want to take time out of your summer to work on your applications, but the sooner you get them done, the less stressed you will be!  Set a deadline for yourself and take it day by day.
  4. Ask questions.
If you are confused about any part of the application, get in touch with the admissions office (212-217-3760).  Everyone in the office is there to help you!  While they won’t be able to tell you what piece you should submit or if your essay sounds good, they can help you if you have any confusion about the application process or due dates.
  5. Make a checklist.
Outside of the general application for FIT, there is a SUNY application, fees, and deadlines that you need to follow.  Write everything down and make a checklist of all of the tasks that you need to accomplish in order to ensure that everything is in on time.

Best of luck with your applications!
