Getting inspired at the MET!

Hi everyone!

Last Wednesday, my Precollege class took a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Despite the fact that the subways were the equivalent of a sauna, I had an amazing time.

Finished Inspiration Board

My favorite design by Charles James

photo 4 The purpose of our field trip was to get inspired by the designer Charles James by looking at some of his work. After looking at many of his beautiful designs we were to design an inspiration board that would help a perfumer to decipher what type of smell we would want our perfume to have. Walking into the costume exhibit to look at some of Charles James’ designs was a little overwhelming. He had so many beautiful and elegant designs I was in love.

After leaving the museum my partner and I decided that since Charles James designed many dark and sophisticated gowns our perfume should have an “elegant nighttime” feel to it. In the end we decided we would have to incorporate amber, lavender and a floral smell to make the perfume have that perfect elegant, girly feel to it.

When we were at the museum I took pictures of my favorite dresses to share with you all and I will also add in a picture of our finished inspiration board.

First Day of Classes

My finished bottle of perfume :)

Hi everyone!
I have begun another exciting adventure at FIT. Monday was the first day of my Cosmetics and Fragrance class and let me just say I am already in love! The way this class is being run is that each week we get a new professor for three weeks. The first week my Professor has a degree in working with fragrances, the second week my professor has a degree in the marketing and management aspect of the beauty industry and the last week my professor has a degree in cosmetic design. I am really excited to get an inside look at what really goes on in the beauty industry.

Walking into this class I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but on our first day we were able to make a perfume! It was so cool! We got to pick the scent and color we wanted it to be so my partner and I decided we wanted a fruity smelling pink perfume. We mixed together specific amounts of the scent, color, distilled water, perfume oils and alcohol. Personally I think our perfume came out great.

I think one of the great things about this class is that it is really hands on rather than having  a class that is only a lecture for three hours. I really enjoy learning how to make products and how each product was developed. If you are into the beauty industry I would recommend you take this class if you have the opportunity it was only my first day and I am already having so much fun!

Until next time,

Nicole

New Beginnings

Hi everyone! For those of you who don’t know me from last semester my name is Nicole. Last semester I took the Ins and Outs of Fashion Merchandising class and this semester I will be taking the Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing and Management class. I am so excited to start a new and exciting adventure at FIT. What I wanted to do with my first blog post of the summer semester is to kind of give some words of advice to people who may be taking a Precollege class for the first time. Here are some of my Do’s and Dont’s for taking a Precollege course at FIT:

DO:

  • Try to find people in your class who may travel from the same place you do. It’s always fun to have a travel buddy!
  • Come prepared and on time. You want to make a good impression!
  • Try and make new friends. Although you may be one of the shy kids in your school think of this is a clean slate and let the other people in your class see the real you!
  • Try and learn as much as you can. If you really want to have a career in the Fashion Industry try to learn as much as you can so you can have some knowledge to take with you in years to come!
  • Grab a cup of coffee at Starbucks before class. Ok, this is of course optional but there is a Starbucks right across from FIT and if you are feeling extra tired one morning BAM Starbucks is there.
  • Have fun. Even though you are at FIT to take a class have fun with it and enjoy yourself.

DONT:

  • Be nervous. Most likely everyone is going to be nervous its something new and very different but don’t worry everyone is super nice.
  • Be afraid to speak up. The professors love when students are able to bring something new to a discussion in class so don’t be afraid to share your knowledge!
  • Turn in assignments late. Turning in assignments late is a major don’t. Your professor is expecting you to be able to do assignments and hand them in a timely fashion so stay on top of things!
  • Be afraid to be yourself. This is your time to show your true colors. Being in an environment where everyone shares a common interest is amazing. You will meet so many people and make so many new friends.

I guess what I am trying to say is relax, don’t be nervous and be yourself. I remember my first day of class during the spring semester. I was so ridiculously nervous and now looking back on it I realized I shouldn’t be because it was one of the greatest experiences of my life.

I wish everyone the best of luck this semester!

Until next time,

Nicole

Last Week of Classes

My finished Mood Board :)

I made some great friends Ali & Melissa in class!

I made some great friends Ali & Melissa in class!

Hi everyone! Well, the last week of classes is upon us [ insert crying face emoji here ]. I can’t believe how fast the spring semester of Precollege classes went. It feels like just yesterday I was sitting at my desk nervously writing my first blog post. Although my Fashion Merchandising course is coming to an end and I am going to miss everyone I have met and miss going to classes on Saturdays, I am also really excited to take my summer course. I think I am really going to enjoy the Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing and Management course.

I am also really excited to share that I will be continuing to blog for the summer semester! I will be writing blog posts from time to time until the summer semester starts and throughout my summer Precollege class! I can’t wait to share my new adventure with you all! Makeup has always been a passion of mine and I am super psyched to start taking this course.

The last thing I wanted to share with you all is my end of the semester project! We all got to pick a brand and we had to make a mood board and write a short essay about it. I am going to insert a picture of my finished mood board so you all can see it! I’m really glad I choose to take the Ins and Outs of Fashion Merchandising as my first course because it made my love for fashion even stronger than it already was. I HIGHLY recommend this Precollege course to anyone who thinks that they are interested in pursuing a career in this field in the future.

Thank you guys for reading my blog posts throughout this spring semester!

Bye ( for now at least)

Nicole

A Trip to Macy’s!

nyc_macysHi everyone! This past weekend my Professor invited one of his former students, Bianca, to come and talk to us about her experience working in the fashion industry. Since she works at the Macy’s a few blocks over she was able to take us there and really show us where all of her hard work ends up. As most of you probably know the Macy’s in New York City is literally heaven. With the endless racks of clothes, shoes, bags, makeup and jewelry I could probably spend hours there.

Bianca works hands on with the company INC by Macy’s dealing with people overseas, analyzing sales and thinking about new ways to incorporate new details on to their clothing pieces. She was seriously the sweetest person ever and answered all of our questions. Although she said working in this industry isn’t exactly how it’s portrayed in The Devil Wears Prada she told us her job has pushed her to work harder than she ever thought she could. One thing she told us was after working with a certain garment for so long, finally seeing it on the floor being sold is such an amazing feeling. That statement made me think about how it must feel to see an item go from a simple sketch to being sold to consumers. Wow. This trip allowed me to get the “inside scoop” of what working in the fashion industry is really like and I really enjoyed it.

On the other side of things, there are only two weeks of the spring semester left. I can’t believe it! It went by so fast! I’m going to miss all of the friends I have made in my class and I’m just going to miss the class in general. But, I am also very excited to start my summer Precollege class soon after that! For the class I’m currently taking we have an end of the semester project. I have to make a mood board and write a short essay about a brand of my choice. I of course chose Michael Kors because I am absolutely in love with that brand. I can’t wait to show you guys how it comes out!

Until next time,

Nicole
