My Commute May Be Long, But TOTALLY Worth It

Life since starting Precollege classes at FIT has been incredibly exciting. I find myself always being busy, which is not bad at all. The idea of going to New York City every Saturday motivates me to work harder during the school week and to not procrastinate on my homework. I’m learning so much about fashion trends and how they are created. Finally learning about an industry I’m passionate about inspires me to work harder so I can learn even more. My classmates and I are becoming friends, which is making class even better. My experience so far at FIT has been everything I could ever ask for.

The View Coming Out Of Penn Station

I live in Connecticut, so I have to commute in early every saturday for class. The train ride is about an hour and a half, but I don’t mind it at all.  I arrive at Grand Central around 7:45 in the morning. No matter how many times I’ve been there, Grand Central is still one of my favorite places to be in New York. The architecture is absolutely beautiful. To get to FIT, I either take the 7 to Penn Station and walk from there or I take the shuttle to Times Square and then switch to the 1 there. Using the subway by myself used to be daunting, but now it’s easy and feels normal. When it’s that early on a Saturday morning, New York has a strange, comforting calmness about it. Everyone is just waking up and the day is only beginning. The sidewalks are close to empty compared to the regular chaos during the rest of the day. I have quite a bit of time before class begins, so I usually walk to Whole Foods that is only blocks away from FIT. Going to a grocery store for breakfast gives me so many options of food to eat rather than just going to Starbucks or Panera. This morning, I chose some fruit and a bottle of chocolate almond milk. I walk back to FIT and eat my breakfast until it’s time to go to class.

Right now in class we’re learning about how fashion trends are forecasted and working on our history of fashion projects. My classmates and I each chose a decade of fashion to study and create a presentation about. I love the 1980s and its culture as a whole, so that was the decade I chose. We went to visit the FIT library to look at magazines published in each of our eras and it was so interesting to see how publications have evolved over time. We also visited the Fashion Underground: The World of Susanne Bartsch exhibit at the end of class. All of the clothes featured were so intricately designed and entertaining. It was great inspiration for my project. My classes have never been boring. Learning at FIT is so much fun!
