” 40,246 prospective students applied to … Class of 2024.” – This is descriptive. It is a summary of something that already happened. People who will graduate in 2024 had their applications in before Summer 2020 (when this example was first posted).
“In 2033, the number of … will be 3.6 million. ” This is inferential. We have no facts about what is happening in 2033. That information has not come out yet.
