September 25-27, 2017 third semester Fashion Business Management major Alin Intravisit had the esteemed opportunity to attend the National Retail Federation’s (NRF) Shop.org Digital Retail Conference in Los Angeles, California. Engineering students are normally prefered but Alin’s impressive resume granted her an invitation amongst this intimate student population of 100 top students. Shop.org is noted as being the place to meet the top thinkers and doers from the digital retail community. Guest speakers such as Tyra Banks, Scott Gallaway, and Marc Lore were all proof of that. Shop.org’s educational program keeps you ahead of the curve and gives you insights into what’s next for the digital retail industry. Alin notes “Shop.org is a great way to network with students from other universities as well”.



Alin is currently part of the NRF family as she serves as VP NRFSA FIT where her main responsibilities include scheduling guest speakers, and planning corporate visits and tours. Alin states she has grown so much from being a leader within the club. English is Alin’s 2nd language as she is from Thailand. She notes that it is common for Thai people to be a bit more reserved and shy. This experience has definitely enhanced her public speaking and networking skills. Alin along with NRFSA FIT club members are currently participating in the NRF Student Challenge Competition- The Big Pitch.


In her efforts to become a cultural ambassador for FIT, Alin applied and was awarded the role of Cultural Fellow. International students make up 10% of the FIT student body. This fellowship was created to cater to this portion of the student community and create an inclusive environment.

Ms. Intravisit has left no opportunity unturned as she was a YMA Fashion Scholarship Fund recipient as a Freshman. While the financial award was a major incentive, Alin was also drawn to the opportunity of receiving a mentor to discuss ways in preparing for life “after college”.

Alin’s motto is “There’s no downside to trying whether financial or the experience, just keep trying.”

Forecasting at its best….

During Prof. Ann Cantrell’s Fashion Forecasting class, she and some students were discussing Dover Street Market and how innovative it is especially with its ties to Comme des Garçons. What better way to see it than to go.  Since many of the students had never been to Dover Street Market, Prof. Cantrell was able to set up a tour of both Chelsea locations of Comme des Garçons and then all 7 floors of Dover Street Market. The students will incorporate the visit into the weekly Hunter & Gatherer Journals which include ten entries.  Daphne, the tour guide and head of press introduced the class to so many interesting new brands and how Comme des Garçons and Rei Kawakubo find new designers that are really innovative and pushing the conversation further in fashion. Many of the designers are very much aligned in Rei’s model, being artists and “architects” of their brand, not just creating clothing but starting a movement with their work.  Thanks Daphne….Great job Prof. Cantrell!


Days after this visit, NEW YORK’S Metropolitan Museum of Art confirmed that the theme for its 2017 annual Costume Institute exhibition and Met Gala will be Rei Kawakubo/Comme desGarçons.


BRAG Celebrates 46 Years…

On Thursday, October 20, 2016 BRAG hosted its 46th Annual Scholarship & Awards Gala.  BRAG is a non-profit organization that prepares and educates professionals, entrepreneurs and students of color for executive leadership in the retail, fashion and related industries.  BRAG FIT was the FIRST chartered college club and remains a major club on FIT’s campus today.  Looking forward to the 47th!!!

BRAGGING at Under Armour….

The BRAG FIT Club along with their Adviser Professor Laticha Brown traveled down to Baltimore, MD to visit Under Armour’s Corporate Office.  The visit included a product life-cycle introduction, team activity (product 360 pitch in which the students had to come up with an innovative apparel piece for the future) and a campus tour.  Thank you Under Armour!!!

DIY: FIT visits Etsy……

Professor Ann Cantrell and her FM 326 Sustainability in Fashion Merchandising class visit Etsy.  The visit was fantastic as this course enhances student knowledge of sustainability issues and Etsy is a peer-to-peer e-commerce website focused on handmade or vintage items and supplies, as well as unique factory-manufactured items.

An APPLE A Day…..



Finally it’s here…..well almost.  Apple’s first new product since the iPad five years ago will start shipping April 24th (preorders after April 10th).  Not only is Apple tapping into the “Wearable Tech” category, they are also taking a walk on the Fashion side with launches scheduled in fashion specialty stores in Paris, London, Tokyo and LA.  To work back to the lifestyle of the wearer, three different styles have been created: Apple Sport Watch starting at $349, the Apple Watch starting at $549 and the creme de la creme Apple Watch Edition starting at $10,000.  Will you sport an Apple Watch this Spring?
