This week’s MoW is another new title for us, Osmos. Like several other titles I’ve written about, Osmos is the vision of a single person, Cay Sophie Rabinowitz.

The Osmos project began with a space in Berlin more than 20 years ago. The magazine Osmos came along more recently, in 2013, and is published 4x per year in New York City. It is produced in a storefront in the East Village that houses both a gallery space and the magazine’s production. The title presents contemporary art in a luxurious, designed manner. As contemporary as the space and print edition are, the project seems to lack one of the centerpieces of modern media, a website.

Cay Sophie Rabinowitz developed this title to feature photography as “the medium crossing all creative industries and practices – art, design, fashion, and propaganda, aiming at the core of our imagination.” The title contains an attractive array of essays, interviews, and reviews, all of which promote an aesthetic centered on photography, but presented on heavy paper, color printing and straightforward critique in minimalist text.

Rabinowitz developed her editorial skills working up to Senior Editor for Parkett magazine. In 2009 she launched Fantom, another photography oriented title. In addition to those projects, she has also directed the contemporary art fair Art Basel, taught photography at Parsons the New School and Columbia University, and launched the fashion brand Giulietta with designer Sofia Sizzi.

Osmos is interesting for both the view of the art world it provides and its graphic design features. Come take a look!
