I have questions with 1.3/40 and 44 on HW 1, please help!

ANSWER:

We will talk about 40 first.

Since x squared is a year, it needs to be 4 digits and must be in the range, 19– or 20–. It has to be a year in which the author COULD be 76.

You may be able to square 40 or 50 in your head! What do those give you? 40 squared is 1600, which is an IMPOSSIBLE answer. 50 squared is 2500. That is also IMPOSSIBLE.

This narrows it down so our x will be in the 40s. The only counting numbers ( ) that fit the criteria are 44 and 45.

44 squared is 1936 and 45 squared is 2025. Which of these makes sense for our problem? The author will be 76 in x squared.  76 in 1936 or 76 in 2025? If you’re unsure there is a big hint in the question that says “assuming that he lives that long.”

Once you know which year he is 76, you are not done! We want the year the author was born. If he will be 76 in _ _ _ _, then he was born in _ _ _ _ – 76.

For 44, you need to read the directions carefully. We want the SUM of the missing digits.  It is okay if your answer is in the NONE OF THESE. Those are my two hints for that one! If you need more help with these, or any other problems send me an * Email * using the Blackboard course link.
