Hi, welcome back!
We’re going to do something a bit different for today. For today we picked the subject of hoverboards. We’re going to show you a few different places to get information about them.
But first, this fun image from Mad Magazine:
(Yes, we know we used MAD as the MoW a few months ago, but their covers are so great! You’ll probably see more of them for this reason. And the New Yorker covers, too!)(Here’s the link to that post, which includes a history of MAD magazine.)
Being a quirky humor magazine, their take on the hoverboard craze has a tongue-in-cheek list piece and a zany illustrated piece:
So how did hoverboards get to market?
This is from the “What’s New” section of the February issue of ToyBook, a trade magazine for the toy industry. Obviously the toy industry is eager to sell these things, so they aren’t the best source for unbiased reporting.
ToyBook is one of the active titles we maintain for our Toy Design major. It focuses on costumes, games, dolls and figures, and stuffed toys. It also features many products with licensing tie-in to larger franchises, i.e. Star Wars, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Disney films.
So how, with FIT library databases, would we find out more about hoverboards and their safety issues? A good basic database is Business Source Complete from Ebscohost. Login using your FIT username and password, and then you can search for your topic.
A quick search for “hoverboards” gave me 98 articles, many from Fortune, Time. Further into the listing, titles as diverse as Electronic Design and Modern Healthcare. You can’t get to these without that FIT username and password, but those who can log in can easily read lots on the subject.
Come take a look!

Thanks for the information. It’s good to learn about the specialized databases.
That is a good list about hoverboards…..13 things you probably did not know about hoverboards! The 6th point about banning in airports is true, its a safety concern! Thanks for sharing!
