time of year for Santa&#8217;s Helpers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the last month, the Periodicals Department has been full of students working hard on final projects.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve had students working on fashion illustration, packaging design, interiors, papers, and who knows what else.\u00a0 But now that the dust has settled, most have gone home, and it&#8217;s time for the last minute gift panic.\u00a0 For those of you (us) who celebrate either Christmas, or Kwanza or Channukah, this is the time of year for running around with lists and parcels, and wrapping paper and shopping.<\/p>\n<p>For those of us with more taste than money, the holidays mean several consecutive months of busily making presents for our loved ones.<\/p>\n<p>This year, I was inspired by the Therese de Dillmont&#8217;s<strong> &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/fit.sunyconnect.suny.edu:4699\/F\/1LF9GQRX3KXJ18HBU6IPYP4G19KHG3MVPG6TRKMXP2JS3QY9MQ-37584?func=full-set-set&amp;set_number=000474&amp;set_entry=000008&amp;format=999\">Encyclopedia of Needlework<\/a>&#8220;<\/strong> to make a handkerchief for my Dad.\u00a0 (TT 750 .D572 copies both on 5 Main and in Art Ref) He&#8217;s the only person I know who still uses cloth ones, but it makes that a nice gift possibility.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to pull 2 or 3 threads about a half inch in from the edge.\u00a0 Then as I hem it, I&#8217;ll use one of the drawn-thread hems from this Needlework&#8221;, originally published in English in 1886<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I&#8217;ll probably use blue DMC floss, a couple strands, for the hemming threads.\u00a0 Blue is his favorite color, and DMC is readily available and easy to use.\u00a0 Plus, since it&#8217;s boil-fast, it can hold up to anything my Dad can dish out.\u00a0 DMC has been around since the 1880s, because Mme. de Dillmont refers to it as well.<\/p>\n<p>And, because I&#8217;m easily side-tracked, I found this awesome book that has just some of the needlework projects from <strong><em>Godey&#8217;s Lady&#8217;s Book<\/em><\/strong>:\u00a0<strong> &#8220;<a Book<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 We have it in the Periodicals &amp; Electronic Resources Services on <em>microfilm<\/em>.\u00a0 The microfilm format is a bit odd, but it&#8217;s so much fun to see nineteenth-century ads and house plans and to read the kinds of projects that were &#8220;normal&#8221; to the editors at that time.\u00a0 Which is probably pretty similar to what&#8217;s &#8220;normal&#8221; to Martha Stewart, but one hundred years or so earlier.\u00a0 (Speaking of which, the FIT PERS also has <em><strong>Martha Stewart Living<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 As well as <strong><em>Marie Claire 100 Idees<\/em><\/strong>, the French craftacular magazine.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.fitnyc.edu\/volumesandissues\/files\/2012\/12\/100idees0081.jpg\"><img essentially all about making things, we&#8217;ve added a lot of relevant new magazine titles and books to our holdings.\u00a0 Besides <strong><em>100 Idees<\/em><\/strong> (it&#8217;s French), we also now subscribe to a more, er, unisex?\u00a0 title called <strong><em>Make<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.fitnyc.edu\/volumesandissues\/files\/2012\/12\/Make005.jpg\"><img more Home-Depot oriented and rather less Michael&#8217;s or Joanne Fabrics.\u00a0 Which is good and we want to encourage well-roundedness.\u00a0 But the Power Ranger-sort of beast on the front maybe makes this point a bit more strongly than necessary?\u00a0 Fortunately, I know a lot of women who like Power Rangers and Transformers and can frequently be found in Home Depots.\u00a0\u00a0 We can&#8217;t accuse anyone of sexism because the point is that we should all have choices, right?\u00a0 So here, learn how to setup traps and recycle your gray water right here&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Myself, I&#8217;m better with needle crafts than power tools, however.\u00a0 And am making rather more traditional Christmas presents than one might find in <strong><em>Make<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 For my Mom,\u00a0 (working the Victorian theme here), I began a pair of socks sometime last year.\u00a0 They&#8217;re from this book,<strong> &#8220;<a The pattern isn&#8217;t coming out nearly as well as the sample.
