Hi, everyone!
October begins Monday, but this great month-long event gets sold out long before. New York City’s Architecture and Design month goes by the name Archtober and is a long list of great lectures, tours, panel discussions and stories about buildings and spaces around the city, and the people who make them. Museums and schools get involved and everyone learns cool stuff.
Every day features a different Building of the Day. The program includes tours of that building, and often accompanying lectures and panels on the design issues the architecture addresses.
Open House New York is the accompanying program that plans tours for spaces all over the 5 boroughs. The tour weekend is October 10-14 this year. These are designed to educate the participants about the issues involved in planning urban spaces. It is a celebration of design organized by people who are passionate on the subject.

NYC museums participate as well. Several each year plan exhibitions to complement Archtober programs. Here is this year’s listing. This year the Cooper Hewitt has two that sound especially relevant to FIT’s programs.
One is focused on color and how it works:

The other looks into design that interacts with the other non-sight senses:
The Senses: Design Beyond Vision
Of particular interest are the many presentations tying types of architecture to social/cultural movements, such as Hip Hop, or the recent interest in sustainability.

Archtober Love that word. The designs and structures around NY are pretty amazing
