Dressing shiny for the holidays?

Women with green dyed hair shaped as a Christmas tree

We don’t need to tell you what to wear to your office holiday party. Every fashion site has some little vignette on the subject. Wear lots of Pantone Shaded Spruce 19-4524 and Grenadine 17-1558 (2 of 2017’s Pantone top 10), wear sequins and patterned tights with boots, get out that LBD, and wear lots of sparkly makeup and accessories. But the trend this fall that’s good and weird is the Christmas Tree Hair thing.

Equal parts Who from Whoville (Dr. Seuss’s The Grinch’s adopted home) and ugly-Christmas-sweater extension, the adventurers attempting these decorated beehive hairdos have gotten a ton of press.

This pic has been around several years and seems to be unattributed. It looks like it’s a hair salon publicity shot, don’t you think?

This trend picked up speed, apparently, because a few of these pics are dated 2015, and several of the popular pics trended on IG last year, 2016. Some related posts were originally negative. But people are talking about the trend again this winter. Bunches of articles point to the same group of pictures, but each writeup contains a few new ones.

Like so many things, the amount of news coverage the trend has received is disproportionate to the number of people posting pics of their hair. Go figure!
