Introducing Precollege Blogger: Andres

Greetings, my name is Andres Lucio, I personally prefer to be called, by my first name, although many people do refer to me by my last name. I’m 16 years old, I have a variety of interests, mainly art, I enjoy painting (just art in general), writing, debating, politics, reading, in that order. This semester I’m taking the course HGD 174 2-D Animation Using Photoshop. I am self-taught, most of my art progress was done single-handedly. I moved to the USA 2 years ago. My native language is spanish but I have been learning English since I was 5 years old and got to speak English more fluid in the last couple of years. I know basic sign, as in American sign language, and I enjoy learning new languages and cultures. I’m quite an introvert, while I enjoy the company of people, I don’t like going out a lot. My main place of comfort is my own house. One of the reasons why I think the program is going to be interesting is because it will allow me to go out more. I enjoy the city, it is in my top 10 favorite places in the world. I don’t think it will be as challenging to explore the city I love while being remaining an introvert during the Precollege Program. I’m am also pretty forgetful, which is one of my defective evolutionary traits aside from being kind of lazy, and a stubborn individual but when I work on something I am passionate about, my resolve increases a lot. I enjoy a lot of shows and media (current personal favorite being a webcomic called Homestuck).

My interest in art has always been prevalent in my life, even when I was a little kid as young as 5, I always enjoyed drawing my own artwork in the blank part of the page instead of coloring. I didn’t really see art as a career until later in life. My family pushed me towards something that was related to drawing like architecture but it just wasn’t the same. I discovered that I was enticed by animation, I enjoy writing and those two activities are fused into one in storyboarding which I hope to learn more about in this course. I’m slightly better at illustrating than writing. I found animation pretty mesmerizing, moving drawings were the coolest thing ever to me when I was a little kid. I found out about the Precollege course through my sister, who is a big inspiration to me. She applied for FIT once, which also attracted me to the college, she is also an artist, and I currently live with her, she is like a second mom. I want to learn how to animate and make stories because I want to inspire more kids with this medium the same way it inspired me to become an artist. Animation is the type of media that really allows for creative freedom because you can truly express yourself and your ideas, it’s just amazing.
