Hello from South Carolina! : Guest Post by Faculty Aya Kakeda

Hello from South Carolina!
I was invited to an Artist Residency from  at
The Children’s Museum of the Upstate in Greenville South Carolina.
Thank you to the Museum and also to the
National Endowment for the Arts Foundation for the grant.
The Children’s Museum is having an exhibition called Hello Japan, introducing children to the old traditional as well as new Japanese culture such as Karaoke,
Prikura, Harajyuku Fashion, Manga, Anime, etc.
I was invited to do four workshops and an artist talk during this residency.
My workshop was about a simple way to make characters. It was fantastic to work with kids (and adults) during the workshop.
They were amazing once they got the “how to” part down-
they really got into it and created many of their own characters.

Here is a link to a TV show that museum president Nancy Halverson and I were invited to. You can see the exhibition here and very small part of what I did at the workshop.
You can see more of Aya’s work here.

Catch up!

In no special order, it is time to fill you in on all of the goings on in the MFA in Illustration. Faculty and students have been BUSY with all kinds of great stuff!

Han-Yuan Yu, MFA ’15,  NEVER stops! Here he is a featured artist as well as the cover artist for IMAGINE FX Magazine. We are so proud of you, Han! How do you do it all AND keep up with school? AMAZING!1902709_10152222587208818_1024580191_n 1966705_622475101157276_207465944_n

Look Who’s Talking

We’ve had a bunch of great guests come in to lecture this semester! First up, famed illustrator and character designer, Peter De Séve! Peter is the magic hand behind Scrat, and a lifetime of other masterful drawings, and characters, from New Yorker covers to a slew of animated movies, notably the Ice Age series from Blue Sky Studios. Having him in the intimate setting of our classroom was such a rare and special treat. Thanks to Professor Brian Ajhar, a top notch character designer in his own right, for bringing him
into the classroom. As you can see, Peter is a living character!

EPIC Lecture! Tyler Carter of Blue Sky Studio visits MFA in Illo

Pun Intended! In just two weeks, the latest animated feature, EPIC will open, delivered  from Blue Sky Studios, of Ice Age and Rio fame. We were SO very lucky to have Vis Dev artist Tyler Carter come to our classroom to deliver a jam-packed with info lecture and
A-MAZING demo. It was magic all the way around. Tyler is an incredible talent and speaker and as a great surprise ending, brought some give-away goodies. After mapping out to us in detail the way the pipeline works, he created this portrait- in just under 40 minutes. You could hear a pin drop as we all watched in awe and listened to a rousing lesson on VALUE in digital painting. What a night! Look for his work on EPIC. Thank you, Carter- you blew us away!

Drawings, Drawings, Everywhere! Bill Martin at FIT

We have been privileged to have had great guest speakers this past semester. Take a look at our studio- not a bare spot to be had as draftsman extraordinaire Bill Martin visited with us from way out in New Jersey one sunny fall Saturday. Martin truly draws like a dream and brought, literally, hundreds of his reportage drawings to share with our first year students, who are in the midst of their own semester long reportage assignment. You can see the awe and pleasure that the work brought. Bill was inspiring as he shared his philosophy and even, a little demo. After that, we all hoofed it up to Times Square, where we tackled the crowds, drawing it all! Thank you, Bill!

The MFA in Illustration had an incredible visit from Society of Illustrators Gold Medal award winner Marcos Chin. Marcos actually came in to do a bit of an interview role-play with our thesis bound students-turned out that he was a bit too nice to play the difficult interviewee and instead, showered us with tons of information! Afterwards, he stayed on and showed his work, self promo-pieces and his new silkscreened tee shirts. Marcos is really generous-
we reaped the benefits of some
give-aways- and so much fun to
be around.
Thank you, Marcos!!!  http://www.marcoschin.com
