They are press too.\u00a0 If you hire a PR firm to pitch for you, then you really don\u2019t need this information since the firm will be practicing it anyway (at least you hope they will). But many of you out there are bootstrapping your company and making the media contacts yourself. So here\u2019s a few general things to know BEFORE you approach the media\/bloggers:<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Make sure you have a compelling story<\/strong> \u2013 nothing turns an editor off more quickly than churned out \u201cmeaningless\u201d press releases&#8230;on things like promotions, new hires, we&#8217;ve moved, etc<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Communicate it quickly and clearly<\/strong>&#8230;don&#8217;t ramble<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Offer value<\/strong> &#8212; your story\u00a0 should have value to the person you are pitching and thus their audience<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Establish a relationship<\/strong>, have a chat, find out what they look for, they may not use your information now but they may remember you for something in the future \u2013 or remember you (fondly) the next time you call \u2013 or when they change jobs<\/p>\n<p>5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Don\u2019t \u201dthrow\u201d material at the press<\/strong> (i.e. poorly formatted, copied and pasted sloppily) \u2013 if you treat it like junk, so will your contact&#8230; look up some press release formats on the web and follow them.<\/p>\n<p>6.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Don\u2019t blog just to be linked and boost your SEO<\/strong> (search engine optimization) \u2013 bloggers can see that coming a mile away \u2013 and avoid it<\/p>\n<p>7.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong> Just remember \u2013 pitching is like any relationship<\/strong> \u2013 establish it and it can work wonders for you \u2013 mistreat it and you\u2019re in for trouble \u2013 and the press have a very long memory<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Sandra Holtzman teaches <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fitnyc.edu\/3064.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CEO 035: Licensing<\/a>.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Actually, it\u2019s more like be respectful of them.\u00a0 And to bloggers as well.
