{"id":136,"date":"2014-12-15T18:03:57","date_gmt":"2014-12-15T22:03:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.fitnyc.edu\/gradstudies\/?p=136"},"modified":"2018-09-09T17:46:48","modified_gmt":"2018-09-09T21:46:48","slug":"ny-seminar-no-sleep-till-brooklyn-by-pamela-ellsworth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.fitnyc.edu\/gradstudies\/2014\/12\/15\/ny-seminar-no-sleep-till-brooklyn-by-pamela-ellsworth\/","title":{"rendered":"NY Seminar: No Sleep Till Brooklyn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\">GFM students took a break from lectures at the SUNY Global Center in Manhattan during the recent New York seminar to spend a day exploring the rapidly evolving and consistently inventive retail\u00a0environments of Williamsburg and Greenpoint, Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 508px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.fitnyc.edu\/gradstudies\/files\/2014\/12\/subway.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"508\" height=\"362\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Global Fashion Management Students from Paris and Hong Kong join their colleagues in New York for a 10 day Intensive Seminar of lectures and site visits. Brooklyn is just a short subway ride away.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">These neighborhoods \u2013transformed from their origin as industrial, manufacturing centers, and home to thousands of immigrants who moved to the area from Manhattan\u2019s lower east side in the early 20<sup>th<\/sup> century \u2013 were rezoned for development along the East River in 2005. The zoning ordinance allowed for light manufacturing, making it possible to continue apparel production. The new \u201ccreative economy\u201d has provided Williamsburg and Greenpoint with an energy that is beginning to attract mainstream Manhattan retailers. But the neighborhoods\u2019 small retailers are keeping their edge as local customers have given them permission to indulge in \u201cslow\u201d fashion and reward them for their courage. Two of our favorites are <a href=\"http:\/\/ingodwetrustnyc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>In God We Trust<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kaidutility.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kai D. Shana\u2019s collections are reminiscent of her New England heritage, infused with attitude and style, sung to Veruca Salt and Joan Jett, and made in Brooklyn (and Manhattan). A gifted designer, his ideology, \u201crefined for the modern artisan and built to last,\u201d is visible in every garment.
