{"id":325,"date":"2010-03-25T23:59:08","date_gmt":"2010-03-26T04:59:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.fitnyc.edu\/futureoffashion\/?p=325"},"modified":"2014-02-10T22:25:25","modified_gmt":"2014-02-11T03:25:25","slug":"materialization-in-a-material-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.fitnyc.edu\/futureoffashion\/2010\/03\/25\/materialization-in-a-material-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Materialization in a material world&#8230;.."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The whole idea behind the Alice in Wonderland theme, was to use materialization, adding a textural element to my garments. \u00a0For dress #2, I chose to use 100% cotton (for the cotton competition); this being said, manipulating the fabric to add an 3d element was critical to my design. \u00a0The base is made out of 100% cotton sateen in an eggplant color and the textural elements are 100% cotton voile. \u00a0A very light weight almost &#8220;see through&#8221; cotton.<\/p>\n<p>The bodice is constructed by fluting. \u00a0Not the music instrument but the overlapping of 1&#8243; bias strips (Bias: the 45% angle of the grain line of the fabric). \u00a0The strips are all sew on by hand and the seams are all hidden. \u00a0Here is a pic of them just pinned on. \u00a0They still need to be sewn.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_347\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-347\" class=\"size-full wp-image-347\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.fitnyc.edu\/futureoffashion\/files\/2010\/03\/untitled-21-0-00-06-18.jpg\" alt=\"Fluted Bodice\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.fitnyc.edu\/futureoffashion\/files\/2010\/03\/untitled-21-0-00-06-18.jpg 480w, https:\/\/blog.fitnyc.edu\/futureoffashion\/files\/2010\/03\/untitled-21-0-00-06-18-187x250.jpg 187w, https:\/\/blog.fitnyc.edu\/futureoffashion\/files\/2010\/03\/untitled-21-0-00-06-18-300x400.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-347\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fluted Bodice<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The skirt of dress #2 is going to be mostly covered in a pleated materialization. I started with a 2# wide x 54&#8243; long strip of cotton, ironed it and started pinning the fabric to paper for stability. \u00a0Pleating and pinning as I go along. \u00a0The end result is only 17&#8243; long. \u00a0Then I take it to the sewing machine and stitch down the middle of the pleats. \u00a0Trim the edges with pinking sheers to prevent fraying. \u00a0Tear off the paper from the back and the piece is ready to be hand sew on to the base of the skirt. \u00a0Not that this whole process for 1 yd of fabric took about 7 hrs.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<style>\n\t\t\t#gallery-1 {\n\t\t\t\tmargin:
