On April 15th, award-winning photographer and Fulbright recipient, Erika Larsen, spoke to\u00a0Brad Paris’ portfolio review class about her time with S\u00e1mi reindeer herders of the Scandinavian arctic.<\/p>\n

Ms. Larsen showed stunning images and video segments of reindeer herding and hunting, meal preparation, family\u00a0portraits and aspects of daily life.<\/p>\n

Over a four-year period, she gained access gradually:\u00a0\u00a0“The first trip I didn’t shoot much, only 45 photos.” Living with two S\u00e1mi families she started out “picking herbs and cleaning…They started by making me ‘do’ the S\u00e1mi culture through daily work,” she said.<\/p>\n

Not until a year later did she see reindeer and understand its importance to the culture. “It\u00a0wouldn’t\u00a0exist without reindeer,” she said.<\/p>\n

Her stays became progressively longer. \u00a0Ms. Larsen is now studying the S\u00e1mi language full time. She plans next to chronicle the seaside S\u00e1mi. Reindeer, she said, is only 10 percent of S\u00e1mi culture.<\/p>\n
