Summer!

Hey Everyone,

Summer is quickly approaching us, with finals and projects winding down, we are all excited for something. This summer I will be switching from being an intern to a full time position! As to most that doesn’t sound exciting but I truly love my job and its a great opportunity for me. I will also be doing a lot of traveling. I have a cruise in august for a late birthday present, Canada in July, Philly June 7th for my birthday and as nerdy as this sounds a Tom petty concert, as well as Boston and a few other short weekend trips for weddings. THEN, Next semester I graduate! and I will be back at school two days a week. I am beyond excited that I am finally finishing , and happy that you all got to live through it with me. College is a great time for finding yourself, your career, and sometimes not sometimes its just a great time. But whatever it may be for you I couldn’t be more grateful to say I have been a student and a voice at FIT.

How will you be spending your summer?

Summer classes’ Do’s and Dont’s

Almost every semester now I have taken a summer class, although they have only been online they really instilled a good work ethic in me. My personal advice is if you can take summer classes’ online do it, best decision I made. If you want to travel and work you have more flexibility to do so. This summer session I am taking two classes, one online and one at the college. So here are a few things I do to prepare myself:

Do:

  1. Get an agenda, keep everything super organized.
  2. Get to know your professor, summer classes go quickly and are a full class packed into a few weeks, so you never know when you will need help.
  3. Only take 1-2 classes per summer session, it is a lot to take in.
  4. Check when your class starts, usually it’s only a short period of time after your semester ends.
  5. Register to classes early, summer gets full quickly.

Don’t:

  1. Don’t wait till the last minute.
  2. Don’t try to write your papers or assignments at the beach, bringing your laptop or wok isn’t always the smartest idea.
  3. Take a bunch of classes at different colleges to try and get the most of your summer classes, trust me stick to one to two.
  4. Don’t wait till your semester ends to register, most people do this in case they fail they have a backup but always register as soon as you are allowed.

Do you have any tips for summer classes? Do you prefer online or in class? Let me know!

What FIT taught me for my first job

Hey Everyone,

So as we approach the end of the semester with just about a month left , I started to think about what I have learned throughout college that I have actually used in my actual everyday job.

The first and most important thing I learned was to be humble. When you are fresh out of college or even starting a new job some people tend to jump right in and act like they know everything when in reality they know nothing yet. It is not a bad thing to admit you don’t know much that’s what life is all about. FIT has always encouraged me to ask questions and learn, take in as much as you can, and if it is your first day don’t act like it is your 500th day. Being humble is also realizing you need start somewhere , that can be as an intern, a secretary, whatever it may be but one day you will work your way up the ladder, I promise!

Next, don’t take criticism to heart. For every Art and Design student you know what I am talking about. There will be people who love your work ethic or work while others do not. If they don’t work harder and do your best. Don’t dwell on one person giving you a hard criticism.

  • Network, regardless if you think your doing it now you are. Making connections with your peers and professors is a great way to start!
  • Communication, emails and daily contact around the office are apart of everyday life. You email your friends, teachers, bosses. But please remember not to email your coworkers or bosses like you do with your friends or call your boss girl or dude ( unless that’s the kind of place it is) everything varies but FIT taught you to know the differences in settings!

Lastly, Time management sometimes you will be given a task at your job to work alone on. Projects and deadlines have prepared you for this! The task may be given a certain amount of time to be done in. Say its the 1st of the month and its due the last day of the month. Do not sit at your desk and wait till the second to last day to complete it , finish it at a good pace. Don’t go to fast and miss things but do get it done as soon as possible and ask for more work. In college we do learn time management but sometimes we slack and wait till right before its due.

FIT has taught me a lot and has made me think in a different way then some of my other colleagues, a more creative way at times.  But it doesn’t mean I still cant learn more everyday from someone new or with more experience.

What has FIT taught you that you apply in your work place?

Transfer Credits

Hey everyone!

So I recently ran into a problem and I thought this might be a problem for most people. I currently work full time and have a part time internship so I take all of my classes online so I have enough time for everything . Commuting  to NYC it takes about 2 1/2 hours out of my day. So if I have a class from 9:00-12:00 I have to get on the 12:45 train and then wont get home till 1:50-2:00 then I cant get much work in from 2:00-5:00 when my job is open.

So as you can see why I need to take all my classes online but as I went to register for my last semester there was a math class I needed to take , and the online section was full. I figured I could do one of two things try and take the class somewhere else over the summer or take a chance and see if someone will drop the online math class next semester.

Instead of taking the chance I went to my local community college which is also down the street from my job. But since I live in New Jersey I need to make sure the credits will transfer, and your in luck because there is a way you can get the course approved before taking it and wasting your time!

How to make sure your course is approved:

First thing is first you need to look at FIT’s description of the course and the college of your choices description and see what matches best. Next you need to fill out the “course equivalency” form  http://www.fitnyc.edu/registrar/forms/reg-courseequivalency.pdf. Then either email it to [email protected] or Visit them in C158 with the form and a copy of the course syllabus from the other school.

This process takes about 5 days before they respond to you . Then you will find out if you are approved or not and once you are just go sign up at the other school ! It is actually really simple!

As much as I would love to take all my courses at FIT sometimes you need to go elsewhere to graduate on time or take a class that isn’t offered in the summer or winter because of work, other classes, ect. I am still waiting to hear back to see if my classes are approved , but hopefully I will get my class in this summer and graduate in time!

Why NYC is Great for College Students

Hey there!

I don’t know about you, but I remember when I was picking my college, something that was really important for me was the location. I wanted it to be something totally different to what I was used to back home. I was hesitating between New York and Los Angeles, but ended up picking New York for several reasons:

1. Fashion Capital  As a fashion student New York is the place to be. It’s considered one of the top fashion capitals in the world. You get to see, live and breath fashion firsthand!

2. Proximity Your campus is basically New York City, which means everything is so close. There are so many means of transportation too, which makes it so much easier to wander around the city.

3. Experience all kind of urban nature From parks, beaches, sports fields to parks in the air, you have everything you need.

4. Abundance of museums and art galleries You have a museum for everything.

5. Experience NYFW You get to experience NYFW! Even if you don’t volunteer you still get to see and experience the madness that fashion week has on the city. Walk around and get inspired.

6. So many free events There is always something to do in New York. And if you don’t want to spend any money, there are so many free events around the city. In the summer you can go watch a movie in central park (it’s awesome), there are parades, street fairs and even free concerts!

7. Eat food from all over the world Any cravings you have the city will satisfy them. There are so many different restaurants, bars, diners and brunch places, it will take you two lives to try them all. Enjoy foods of all kind!

8. Concerts and Performances of all types From some of the best broadway shows to amazing ballet performances, you have a wide variety of options. Anything you want to watch will probably be happening soon. And FIT always hook students up with some amazing ticket deals!

xoxo
