Industry Blog: Maker’s Row

A couple months ago my roommate and his brother came to me with questions for how to set up their own small apparel company. All sorts of questions came up such as how much things cost, what information is needed, but mainly how to get products made and by whom. There are companies that work to direct designers and entrepreneurs towards the right contacts in order to help make their products and visions a reality. One such company is Maker’s Row. Maker’s Row is an online company that has connections in various fields of the apparel industry, from consultations, pattern-making, to full on production. For a cherry on top, everybody in their database is right here in the US. They help entrepreneurs understand the manufacturing process, set them up with the right people to help them along their way, and help get that product out to market.

Now I doubt that anybody reading this is going to need a connection with any of these resources, but it doesn’t end there. The main reason I want to tell you about them is because they have a blog that covers every topic you could think of. I love their blog because there is a lot of information regarding manufacturing in the US and how a business works when keeping it local, which gives us a look at the other side of things since we mainly discuss global manufacturing in our classes at FIT. I’ve been staying up late at night just hooked on reading their articles because I find them so interesting. They are understandable for even those that don’t know much about the industry, and they keep their posts relevant and concise. They even have a free “Production 101” class that gives you the basics for how the production process works. Maker’s Row requires payment in order to access some of their other classes and their client database. However, this is a great source just to learn all sorts of things about the industry.

What sort of articles do you look for? Find any interesting ones from Maker’s Row?

Fashion New Source Pt. 5

Women’s Wear Daily

Since its inception in 1910, Women’s Wear Daily magazine has been a leading force in the apparel industry. As an informational staple, the magazine covers general topics such as: fashion, business, beauty, men’s, runway, and accessories. Each topic has several sub-topics. For example, a few that business is broken down into are: trade, HR, marketing, retail, and markets. From a business student’s perspective, WWD gives a really good big picture view in regards to long term strategies. This information can be vital for higher-ups and even for students like us. There are not many sources that have a section devoted solely towards mergers & acquisitions or markets. This is why I like Women’s Wear Daily, because it can give me information that is easy to access sources sometimes require a subscription for.

If you watched NYFW and wanted to look at the styles, WWD has a review of all different designers with an analysis on the lines and photos of the collection. Click here to see more
