Holiday Window Displays 2017:

It’s that time of year again! Before the turkeys are on dinner tables, window displays at iconic New York City department stores are already bringing in Christmas cheer. New York City is known for jaw-dropping holiday visuals, and here are a few I think are worthy of checking out this holiday season!

Bergdorf Goodman, Fifth Avenue –

The display pays homage to seven of New York City’s well-know cultural institutions such as the American Museum of Natural History, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, The New York Botanical Gardens, and the New-York Historical Society. It captures the city’s appreciation for art, history, music, and film with their presentation entitled, “To New York With Love”. As onlookers peruse the windows, they can expect to see displays featuring bejeweled dinosaurs, a large-screen montage of black-and-white films clips, soft-sculpture plant life, neon musical instruments, papier-mâché portraits and sculptures, and signature glass objects.

Macy’s, 34th Street –

Despite tough times for department-store chains, Macy’s has once again shown what it can do when it comes to the magic of the holidays. This year’s window theme is “The Perfect Gift Brings People Together.” The department store has six holiday windows on Broadway and 18 other windows,  including the perennial “Yes Virginia, There is a Santa Claus,” which has had a place of honor for the last 10 years. One window features a Christmas tree as the centerpiece at home Another captures the busy city with an ice skating rink. A third has Santa as a theater conductor during a holiday show.

Lord & Taylor, Fifth Avenue –

Features five animated windows along with fashion windows and an additional 13 smaller windows filled with holiday flair at Lord & Taylor. Each incorporates snow globes to help tell the story. The windows depict a circus scene, polar bears playing in the Arctic and Santa’s workshop. The Lord & Taylor windows are built off-site and take six months to create starting from the vision to the final production. Up to 75 different skilled tradespeople work to put the windows including carpenters, electricians, and skilled painters.

Saks Fifth Avenue –

Saks Fifth Avenue celebrates the 80th year of Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs with its 14 animated holiday window displays along Fifth Avenue this year. Each window features a different scene from the popular fairy tale, including Snow White dancing with the woodland creatures, the Seven Dwarfs coming home from the diamond caves and the Wicked Queen and the poisonous red apple.

Trick or Treat – Netflix Edition:

As Halloween still falls during the week this year, going out to Halloween parties or dressing up on a Tuesday night might not sound the best…so why not watch some scary movies on Netflix this Tuesday if you’re staying in for the spooooky night.

Here’s a special list of some perfect scary movies available on Netflix that are perfect to enjoy on Halloween night:

1. Hush, 2016

Hush, is a thrilling game of cat-and-mouse with the typical nightmare of a home invasion occurring, however, holds an unconventional twist as the main character Maddie, is a deaf and mute woman living in the woods alone. Such a great movie for suspense and action, not super scary though!

2. V/H/S, 2012

V/H/S is a pioneer thriller as it is primarily the first anthology horror film, which is essentially a film that contains multiple short films. The plot has four criminals that are tasked with breaking into a home to steal a VHS tape. They go about doing so and in the process they discover more than just one tape. The contents on those tapes represent the short horror films that are essentially the whole movie. It’s definitely interesting, novel, and most importantly – scary.

3. Oculus, 2013

No, not the virtual reality glasses… Oculus is a film that holds the title of having one of the most tragic plots. Karen Gillan stars as a young woman who is convinced that an antique mirror is responsible for the death and misfortune that her family suffered. The movie puts you through it, and I meant IT, and no, not the clowns! One of my favorite movies that messes with your mind, while also scaring the heck out of you.

Mother’s Day

Mothers. Living breathing magic.  The women that have devoted so much of themselves to you, and without them, you wouldn’t be where or who you are today. This year, Mother’s Day is Saturday May 14th, just a week away. Here are some ways to show your mother some love.

The Essentials

  • A card that sums up your appreciation for your mother
  • Flowers to add some color to her day and remind her of you

Quality Time

Go to one of your mothers favorites spots, or somewhere she has been bringing up recently!

  • Has she been wanting to see a movie recently
  • Everybody likes to laugh. Take her to a comedy show maybe
  • Whats her favorite restaurant or cafe
  • Is she the kind that loves to go to book stores and read all day
  • Would a day trip to a park be something she would like
  • Animal lovers always enjoy trips to the zoo

Presents with Personality

  • A sure way to see some tears of joy from your mom is to give her some framed photos of your childhood with her
  • Have a nickname for your mom? Now’s the perfect time to get her a little token for that
  • Calling all design students! Create a piece that represents what you feel when you think about your mother
  • Any items your mom has been hinting to? Now is the perfect time to do a little research and find those deals

The MOST Important Piece

Say THANK YOU to your mother for everything she has done for you. This is the day you should smother your mother in love and affection. We take our mothers for granted so often, so make sure you take note of all the things your mother does for you.

Mariano’s Survival Guide: LA-NYC

Being bi-coastal has it’s pros and cons. Winter Break is ironically a breeze, but Summer Break sure does bring on the heat when it comes to bringing everything back home. Here are a couple of tips I recommend if you’re far, far, away from NYC.

1. Get a storage unit:

Manhattan Mini Storage has great deals for students. Getting a unit will save your live come summertime when you are left to travel with ALL of your belongings back home on a 6-hour flight, say bye to that extra luggage fee.

2. Change the way you pack:

Simply organizing your things differently will help you stuff some more things into your luggage. Start with shoes at the bottom and work your way up the body. Keep clothes ROLLED not folded and make sure all of your liquids on carry-on are not over 3.4oz!

3. Prepare for the weather back home:

New York has bi-polar weather, just like it’s counterpart Los Angeles, however, when it blazing hot here it can be a rain-fest over there, and vice-versa! Keep up with the weather updates when travelling and try to wear easy layers on flights to ensure weather protection!

Spring 2017: Welcome Back!

Hello everyone!

Welcome back to FIT and hopefully the start to a successful and fun new semester. I hope you all had a beautiful winter break and had the opportunity to recharge, refresh and spend time with friends and family. I had an incredible holiday, I went back to Switzerland and it was the first time in 2 years that I’ve skied, and I forgot how lucky I was to live in such an incredible country. This year I really took advantage of the mountains and the snow to really make the most of my holidays and do activities I wouldn’t be able to do once I got back in the city. Although all of this was really nice, I’m very excited to be back in the New York and start school, and a new internship. I have a lot of plans and fun things I want to accomplish this semester, which is giving me an extra boost of motivation to start. I’ll let you know what those are once the semester kicks in. I’m also exited to start my classes, because after a very busy fall semester, I decided to give myself a mini break this semester, to take classes I always wanted to take and have more time to work on my personal blog.

Let me know how your holidays were down in the comments below, and what you’re most exited about for this semester.

xoxo
