Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!
I hope you all had a happy and healthy holiday with your loved ones. What makes art so incredible is that there are so many different purposes for creating. Whether it be work for clientele, personal satisfaction, or work to raise awareness, art has the power to be extremely impactful. The Illustration Department at FIT recently created artwork to raise crucial awareness about the state of the planet’s climate, specifically the ocean’s. The Ocean Climate Conference at U.N. (from June 5th-9th) focused on ways to “conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.” Their goal is to improve the condition of the ocean for not only the people, but for the planet and its lifespan.
Emi Anderson (displayed below) worked on a project to specifically raise awareness about plastic pollution in the oceans of our planet. Her project was presented at the conference. The image portrays a woman holding a whale underwater, with pollution scattered in the atmosphere around her.
Others student work was displayed at the German Missions in the United States on the United Nations Plaza. The two students are Julia Rios and Rachel Lim, students of the Illustration Department. The exhibition was apart of a much larger exhibition, the Green Bauhaus Communications Project, where ten posters from FIT (the only school representing the U.S.) were a part of the 300 displayed in the show. It is incredible to see students create artwork that portrays such a meaningful message.
