Teaching writing across the curriculum involves creating writing situations that help students practice with discourse in any given field. Expectations for “good” writing vary across disciplines, which means that our students often have the experience of dropping in and out of discourses as they move from one class to another. Therefore, teaching writing, we believe, involves encouraging students to practice negotiating audience expectations, context, and purpose.
