Hi, everyone! We’re still catching up here, as well as packing up to move. But here’s this week’s MoW. That guy might look familiar, because he (Roger Moore) was the face of James Bond for seven films between 1975 and 1985. The magazine is Men’s Harper’s Bazaar Italia, which was published in Milan contemporary with Moore’s stint as .007. Sadly, Moore died yesterday at the age of 89.
The title seems to have changed a few times. The first issue was published February/March 1979 and the last in July/August 1983. Our holdings continue in September/October 1984 under the new title, Uomo Harper’s Bazaar. Our collection has a lot of gaps, but the whole title ceased in 1994, when it became an occasional supplement to the Italian fashion glossy Collezioni.
This means you get to see lots of pouty, pretty young men with feathered hair. Lots of leather goods in support of the Italian accessories industries, and lots of Italian designers in their chic casual best.
I can’t find much written about this title, other than that it was published in Milan, through the period when Roger Moore played the world’s most famous spy. And through the period of Calvin Klein’s rise to domination of the American sportswear market (the issue we have posted at our service desk shows Klein at his most handsome.)
It’s a fashion magazine in the truest sense, full of images of models wearing the latest clothes and accessories, both in editorial layouts and advertising. It features Italian designers heavily, but not solely. Additional content is limited to short notes on culture and sports (soccer), but it does cover the men’s runway shows.
