A Borrower (of diamonds) or a Lender Be?

Given that we’re in the midst of the Cannes Film Festival,  we’ve just finished both the FIT Future of Fashion Show and the Costume Institute Gala, I found this article in the New York Times relevant to our interests: in it, the head of Fred Leighton jewels, the rep for Evermark US (a subsidiary of De Beers), and designers Monique Peon and Martin Katz talk about lending jewelry to actresses for big red carpet events.

One of the big events the jewelers talked about was L’Wren Scott’s rough-cut diamond necklace, produced by Evermark, and worn by Nicole Kidman with a black Balenciaga gown to the 2008 Academy Awards. The jewelers hailed this as a perfect, unscripted moment where big jewels got to shine on a well-known celebrity neck without the jewelers paying in advance for the product placement.

Their other moment of perfect spontaneity was this IG photo of Kate Hudson, reluctant to give back her Leighton diamond earrings.

 

 

 

With that in mind, I’m going to add a few snarky comments about the red carpets in Cannes this week, just because. We’re still super busy with our moves and packing and the end of the semester here, so let these beautiful women in their gazillion $$$ gowns amuse you in the meantime!

 

Starting out with Aishwarya Rai Bachcha as our header, wearing a BIIIIGGGG gown by Michael Cinco (a Filipino-born designer who works out of Dubai) to the Okja premier. THIS is the kind of gown we’d like to see more of at the Met Gala! Hey, Anna Wintour! Invite more Bollywood stars next year! Invite more worldwide celebrities *every* year, in fact!

 

 

And this is what I’m loving most about Cannes: the usual American and British crop of actresses are doing their thing, no lie. But the Bollywood women are crushing it! I especially love this gown worn by Deepika Padukone at the Loveless premier. While I disagree with the  because I don’t find it all that daring (com’on! Everyone is wearing that hip-high slit this year!), it is stunning in its simplicity and it’s my favorite color.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

It’s frustrating how Euro/America-centric the go-to news sources (i.e. Elle, People, Vogue) are. In order to find good images of the Bollywood actresses, I had to go to the Indian news sources like Deccan Chronicle or Times Now. And what about the Chinese film businesses big stars? Hard to find in American press. To find out what Fan BingBing wore to the event’s opening gala, I had to go to Jing Daily.

 

 

 

 

 

Another lovely woman in a pretty dress is Winnie Harlow, wearing Zuhair Murad at the Loveless premier. Wait, what?? Have you people NO fashion history in your heads at all??

Murad’s workshop may be responsible for the production of this gown, but it is a straight up knock-off of one of the most fabulous gowns of all time, the dress Vivienne Westwood created for Dita Von Teese’s wedding (to Marilyn Manson in 2005) extravaganza.

 

 

 

 

 

I love gorgeous big gowns with sensuous drapery, but drape your own, Zuhair! And Harlow, get your stylist to do more research!
