Urban beautification, FIT style: #BrickFIT #ChalkFIT

Illustration is a major that doesn’t get a lot of display space here at FIT. So one of my favorite projects of the year is when those students get free rein to decorate a tiny slab of FIT sandstone with their creative vision. This year the project is less visible because it’s on 28th street, instead of 7th Avenue, but that also means each artist got a lot more square footage to decorate.

Here are some pics I took Wednesday night. I think the process is as important as the finished result, and cooler to watch. I encourage the artists to download the pics they want, as long as I’m acknowledged in any formal print format. Enjoy!

For those of you not here in NYC, enjoy the tour. The students are painting a brick wall that runs along 28th street, behind the FIT buildings.

The pics are in order from the 7th Avenue side towards the 8th Ave. side. This was just as the sun was setting.

Probably the best part of this was the convivial atmosphere while the students worked. Friends were hanging out watching and commenting, and everyone seemed to be having a good time.

It was a beautiful evening, too. Temperature in the mid-60s,  perfect for working in long sleeves, but no need for a jacket.

I love the fact that each student was given the same assignment and did something completely different with it.

These murals are so individual, and the artists are out there painting their hearts out. Talent and passion: those things that make someone a good FIT student 🙂

I love that this project takes a really ugly area, along 28th street (it’s our loading doc and other physical plant stuff), and makes it an awesome show-off of FIT talent!

Plus, this project gives the students a lot more square footage to decorate. When they were confined to FIT’s 7th Avenue facade, each student only had a space about 3′ wide.

Enjoy the project! It’s only around for a few weeks, usually, so come take a look soon!
