Purging E-mail

By , March 22, 2012 2:55 pm

Ask IT: Question & Answer Forum:

In the previous version of exchange, we work periodically have to purge out deleted message from the server.  Is that still necessary, and if so, how does one do it.  I’ve looked and can’t figure out how.

If this is not necessary, great – but perhaps an e-mail should be sent to exchange users regarding that fact; if it is necessary, then an e-mail should be sent with instructions.

-Dr. Arthur Kopelman

Answer:

Dear Arthur,

You may purge your “Deleted Items” folder by right-clicking on the folder and selecting “Empty Delete Items” from the context menu. We will create a set of instructions and share with the community. Thank you for the suggestion.

The Cloud is an expanding, evolving environment where centrally located software systems facilitate interactive opportunities for a virtually limitless number of users— working from any location. Cloud technology is often credited with dramatic savings in educational licensing, distribution and local network support, but the Cloud does much more than streamline and economize. It is expanding the potential for synchronous and asynchronous teaching, learning and collaboration and helping pave the way to learning environments that are innovative, as well as sustainable. Smart phones and tablet technology have contributed to the growth of the Cloud, at a fraction of the cost of traditional laptops or desktop computers. Innovation has putinto our collective hands tools that are not only affordable, but are actually, in some respects, more powerful than traditional computing—-in part the result of extraordinary access and portability. The Cloud serves every major service category in the world, seamlessly integrating data computation, storage, retrieval, creative and business applications in a virtualized environment. We know this is a new frontier worth contextualizing in a conference setting when we see how the business, design and publishing markets have already gotten on board.

Joining iCloud

iCloud

If you’re like me, you’ve probably been procrastinating and avoiding your move from MobileMe to iCloud, which you will eventually have to do before June 30, 2012. Or maybe, you have an Apple device, but you just haven’t gotten around to signing up for iCloud. If you’re finally ready to move your devices to Lion and iOS 5 (currently, they must be upgraded in order for iCloud to work with them), then here is some information to help you out and to ensure the process goes smoothly.

MobileMe to iCloud

If you’re moving from MobileMe to iCloud:

Here is a set of frequently asked questions on Apple’s website that gives you a good overview of what will be happening to your MobileMe account, what’s new in iCloud, and what will no longer be around. For example, you will no longer get iDisk, Photo Gallery, and iWeb hosting in iCloud, but you do get some great new features like Photo Stream and iTunes Match. And, you still get features like Find My iPhone and Back to My Mac — only now they’re free.

Frequently Asked Questions about the MobileMe Transition to iCloud

Once you decide you’re ready to make the switch, the following Apple support article will  tell you how to best prepare for your move.

MobileMe: About Moving to iCloud

If you’d like to see screen shots of the process and what it should look like, the following is a photo gallery that shows each step in your transition.

Transition from MobileMe to iCloud Gallery

When you’re ready to start, head to http://www.me.com and click on “Move from MobileMe to iCloud.”

Keep in mind, your MobileMe account and all of its functions will stay intact until June 30, 2012, including the iDisk, Photo Gallery, and iWeb features. So, as long as you don’t deactivate your account, you don’t have to worry about losing anything that you have on your MobileMe until then.

If you’re creating a new iCloud account:

Creating a new iCloud account is fairly easy, incredibly useful, and best of all – free. The following Apple support link provides some frequently asked questions about creating an account.

Creating an iCloud Account: Frequently Asked Questions

The only things that you’ll need to use iCloud are an Apple ID (Apple IDs and iCloud) and devices with the correct system requirements (iCloud: Supported System Requirements). You may set up your account right from any of your computers or devices once they are updated and iCloud is turned on.

If you would like more than the allotted 5GB of storage (keep in mind purchased music, TV shows, apps, and books, as well as photos in your Photo Stream don’t count against your 5GB of free storage), you can purchase 10, 20, or 50 additional GB of space.

Trial Version – Revit

By , December 8, 2011 5:27 pm

Ask IT: Question & Answer Forum:

Question:

I was told in my autocad class that we could get a trial version of revit for students, can you tell me where to find it?

-Ellen Lynch

Answer:

Although rivet is currently installed in the c229 lab, the college does not currently provide the software.  It sounds like your professor might have had a source for the software, or we would suggest trying http://students.autodesk.com/ where there is a list of available free software.

Hope that helps!
