outFIT’s @ FIT, by Arden

Let’s face it, it’s fun to get dressed on Saturdays and go to class. Mixing and matching texture, design, and color.  A woman’s time is most valued in the morning, getting the wells of creativity turning!

This week I thought it would be fun to create an album of different outfits I wore each week.

In preparation for my first class, my cowgirl boots popped in my head. This gave a good elevation for my flare jeans, also adding some contrast with the pointed toe of the boot. I paired this with a Free People top tucked in and then lightly pulled out. Of course, my knee length cardigan pulled it all together.

Today was a bad hair day, I needed something to cover up, and quick. I decided to wear my tie dye turban head wrap. Not a better way to wear it with a Ganesh graphic tee and Topshop leather jacket. I love this outfit because of it’s casual and cute feel.

This week I wore a denim jumpsuit, what a great base. I wanted to demonstrate the bounce of color from the pink and brown. How do you think I did? I threw on my cowgirl boots as a finishing touch before running out the door.

When mother nature cries, it’s the universe’s signal to wear my Calvin Klein trench. I layered this piece with a pair of printed pants and a black (material) one piece. And of course a light cashmere sweater, my savior.

Over all, I love overalls. Underneath I wore a J. Crew printed top (because underneath is really what matters). If you are like me and reach for the gold, I highly recommend going to an outlet store. This silk shirt I bought at the Jersey Shore Outlet, there are plenty others but the price in comparison is a steel! Because we were in the studio this week I decided to pair my outfit with comfy Aquatalia booties that are to die for. (Very thankful I fit into my mother’s shoes!)

Now I am starting to see a repetition of denim… But this week I decided to layer my denim dress with a fun beaded belt and warm grey kimono. I threw on a pair of comfortable purple flats from Target and one of  my most comfortable shoes.

My New Besties!

One of the things that I love so much about FIT precollege is making new friends.  Everyone that I meet at FIT is unique and comes from a different place with a different story.  This semester I am lucky to be in a relatively small class, so getting to know everyone was a breeze.  Some people from my class are from New Jersey, others Upstate, some from Long Island (like me!), and some are from the city.  Going on adventures after class is not always fun when you’re alone (and not smart if you know nothing about the subway), so luckily my new best friends are more than happy to join me for lunch, shopping, and just enjoying the city.  It’s also nice that I have so many friends from FIT Precollege because in a year when I hopefully get accepted to FIT, finding a roomate will not be a problem for me. c:

P.S. I’ll get some pictures of my class up here eventually, this week was just crazy because we did our shoe photoshoot.

A Day with Me at FIT

This Saturday’s class was really fun and encouraged us to be as creative as possible.  As mentioned in my second post, my class is doing a project where we have to create a photoshoot setup for a pair of shoes with a background/props inspired by the color, shape, texture etc.  I am working with two other people; Megan and Frankie.

After brainstorming for a while, we decided to use Frankie’s brown leather Steve Madden boots. The color and structure of the boots reminded us of hiking in the woods.

We had a few ideas on how to compose our set. We originally wanted to put branches inside the shoes because they resemble tree-trunks, but we decided a moss ground with a branch and pine cone or two would be more clean and less cheesy. Professor Sokoli suggested we put an insect on one of the boots for that final ‘wow-factor’.

Later, we went on a field trip as a class to the Flower District to look for props. There were so many different kinds of mosses to choose from!

We had fun looking around all of the stores on 28th street for inspiration. I became closer friends with Megan and Frankie as well as everyone else in my class on this trip. We all just get along with each other. It’s really great!

In First Person: My First Day of Class

I had to wake up extra early for the first day of class last week.  I took the 6:40 train at the Ronkonkoma train station rather than my usual 7:40.  I get onto the train and tactfully choose a double-seat so I can spread out my stuff to avoid someone sitting right next to me.  I am wearing a cream and peach H&M blouse, grey skinny jeans, and black combat boots, with my hair in a messy fishtail braid.  On the seat next to me is my new quilted leather Chanel-esque chain bag with a navy, cream, and peach horse-printed scarf tied around the handle, my outdated iPod nano, my FIT Precollege ID hanging from a faux-pearl necklace, a ruffled kitten umbrella, and my fashion-collage folder from the Spring semester.  I suddenly feel anxious and my mind is overflowing with thoughts. I try to not stress out, after all I have done this before and it was the greatest experience of my life.  I put in my headphones and listen to some Animal Collective,  the rest of my trip is a breeze and my worries are gone.

After stopping for a Pumpkin Spice Latte at Starbucks on 7th ave, I make my way to my class on the 4th floor of the D building.  I am the second person to arrive, I sit in the second seat at the first table right next to the girl I later find out is Meredith.  Eventually, my friend Christina from ‘The Ins and Outs of Fashion Merchandising’ arrives, I feel so relieved to see a familiar face in an unfamiliar classroom.

Professor Sokoli turned out to be not only one of the coolest teachers I have ever met, but one of the coolest adults in general.  We gossip about the latest season of ANTM, Rachel Zoe’s new line, and share our excitement for the new show Pan Am and how they are going to pull off the 1960s through props and fashion.  We all introduce ourselves and then he goes through our projects for the semester.  We are going to be doing shoots for a pair of shoes with a setting that relates to the design, shape, or color of the shoe; a food setup; a table setup with a plate representing a specific designer; and our final project will be dressing up a mannequin.  I can’t help but to feel SO excited for this class!

By our 11:15 Starbucks break, I made friends with nearly everyone in the class.  We all have so much in common its natural for us to just click with one another.  Thats one of the things I love about FIT,  we are all in that classroom at 9 o’clock on a Saturday morning because we have a uniting love; fashion.  After only one day of Styling of Fashion, Food and Home Products for the Visual Industry, I already know this semester is going to be a great one and I just can’t wait to get a head start on the experience I need to be a fashion stylist.

xoxo,
