Haute Hangouts

Hi All!

What a crazy week! Last week I arrived at Penn to find that all the trains were cancelled due to the storm. I called my Dad and he had to drive two hours to get my friend and me. It was crazy. We were really hungry so we decided to stop in Hoboken for some chinese food. I ended up getting home around 6pm. But in a strange way it was fun. On the plus side it’s so far been a 4 day weekend for me; I didn’t have school on Monday or Tuesday (yay!).

I can’t believe I’m going to be 16 in less than a week!!!  I felt bad because last Saturday was my friend Grace’s 16th and we were stuck at Penn for two hours. I’m going to Disney World  for my b-day which I’m really excited about, but unforch I’m going to have to miss a class.

Last class I finally finished my skirt. It came out ok; the darts in the back are great, but the ones in the front are too small because I somehow ran out of material. I don’t know if I made the other darts too big or if I just didn’t measure correctly.

I don’t do too much during break since we only have 2o minutes. It goes by really fast. (If only school went by quickly…) I like to check to see if the Style Shop is open. For those of you who don’t know, the Style Shop is a student-run boutique and they always have really cute stuff. It’s located in the A Building Lobby. Unfortunately, it’s not open most weekends. I think I got lucky last weekend because there was an event going on at FIT.

I love Starbucks but I usually go after class now because we aren’t allowed to have drinks in the classroom because of the sewing machines. If I need anything for class I’ll run across the street to the Fashion Design Bookstore or the Barnes and Noble at FIT (in between the B Building and the cafeteria). After class last week I found two great tops at Buffalo Exchange. I basically go there every week! That’s my all-time fave store. I was joking around saying I would go shopping in a blizzard, which is basically what I did last week. If you’ve never been to the Style Shop or Buffalo Exchange, I suggest you check those places out. How did you all “survive” the storm?

Until Next Time,

Emily

A Day at FIT With Me

Hello Again!

My favorite day of the week is Saturday because of [insert drum roll here]: FIT!!! After a long week of boring, pointless classes, I enjoy waking up early to come to the city. The only class I really like this year is AP Art History. Last week was really hard for me though. We inserted darts into the “muslin skirt.” This was hard because the darts had to be equally big and equally spaced out and look the same from the front and back which proved to be a challenge, but it’s a comfort that some people weren’t as far ahead of me.

After class I love going to Buffalo Exchange. That’s my favorite store. I also like going to 34th Street to shop at H&M and Forever 21. But what I like about Buffalo Exchange is that I can find unique pieces that are usually both cheaper and that I like more. If I need any supplies I go to the Fashion Design Bookstore across the street from the C Building — In my opinion that’s the best place to buy supplies. An awesome restaurant is in the area called Cafeteria. They have greattttttttt food (although there was a 45 minute wait last week when I went there – bummer). Another fun place to go is Billy’s Bakery. It’s this cute (tiny) 1950s-style bakery on 9th Avenue. You should check it out. So where do you all like to go after class?

Yours Truly,

Emily

Fashionable Friendships

I’m not exactly a very social person, so naturally it takes me a little while to warm up to people. But the great thing about FIT is that you already know that your classmates have similar interests, because (duh!) you’re taking the same course! This really makes getting to know people much easier, and you make friends much faster. I usually take a class with my friend Meghan, but she didn’t take one this semester so I was a little nervous about having no one to talk to. Luckily, everyone in my class is really friendly and they all dress fabulously, so that nervousness quickly went away.

The course I’m taking is very social; Professor Ross starts each class by talking with us about any fashion news that occurred during the week, or we talk about recent shopping trips. She gets to travel all over the world as part of her job, so she shares stories with us that make fashion merchandising sound incredibly fun.

During breaks a bunch of us usually go hang out in the cafeteria or stop by the bookstore for some magazines. We basically just complain about how many people wear Uggs and pajamas to school but at FIT everyone always looks fabulous. Sometimes we’ll head to the Dunkin’ Donuts across the street for lattes and hash browns…yum! I’m more of a Starbucks person, but it’s New York so there’s one across the street too.

It can be hard to hang out after class because most of us have to catch a train or meet our parents, but we’re eventually planning to stay after to go shopping at Buffalo Exchange. I’ve actually never been there so I’m really looking forward to it. I’ll remember to bring my camera with me to document the event!

Hope everyone had a nice week and Happy Easter if you celebrate it!
