Introducing New Precollege Blogger: Lilli

Being a 17 year old with a (slightly unhealthy) passion for fashion, can be quite a challenge when you have lived your entire life in Upstate New York. The small suburb of Loudonville, which consists of popped collars, Vineyard Vines everything and juicy gossip, is what I call home. A $50 Amtrak ticket can buy me a two and a half hour, one-way escape to one of the greatest fashion capitals of the world, New York City. Fashion is my form of self-expression. Clothing can define who you are, where you’re going and what you’re doing. You can learn someone’s story by just looking at how they styled themselves. When I am in New York City, I feel as though I can express my personal style without being judged!

In the past two years, I have been fortunate enough to take 4 Precollege courses at The Fashion Institute of Technology. Two summers ago, I took two classes in the Visual Presentation and Exhibition Design department. In HDE 114 Styling of Fashion, Food and Home Products for the Visual Industry, we learned the necessary planning and skills to set up a professional photo shoot using different props such as shoes, mannequins, and dinning ware. HDE 115 In-Store Marketing and Retail Event Planning made me aware of the effectiveness of a store’s layout and how to create a product to draw the consumers attention.

After just one week of classes, I realized my true love for styling. In the spring of 2012, I took HSX 121: Passion for Fashion Styling to better my knowledge of specifically, fashion styling. This past summer, I took HDE 114 Styling of Fashion, Food and Home Products for the Visual Industry with Professor Glenn Sokoli again. His outgoing personality really makes lectures and everyday class work so enjoyable! When I am at FIT, I really feel like I am learning skills that will help me find my place in the fashion industry.

I recently just began my senior year of high school. I have yet to accept the fact that I will be a COLLEGE freshman in less than one short year. I feel as though it was only yesterday when I was in the seventh grade and told myself I would do whatever possible to attend FIT in the fall of 2013. Waking up to catch a 6 am train in order to make it to the city for a 9:30 Precollege course might seem crazy to some people. But for me, it is an opportunity to better my chances of being a part of The Fashion Institute of Technology’s Class of 2017! My passion for fashion has slowly taken over every aspect of my life and I couldn’t be happier.

Fashionably,

Lilli
