The Lessons I Learned This Semester…

This semester at FIT has been a whirlwind of draping and patternmaking.  I can’t believe it’s been 11 weeks, but at the same time I feel like I’ve been working on my garments forever!

I’ve come away from this semester with a draped model of a structured pencil skirt, flared skirt, classic bodice, mandarin collar, and (if all goes according to plan tomorrow) a cowl-neck shirt.  I am so excited to use these pieces as basis for my own dresses, skirts, and tops.  However, perhaps more importantly, I’ve learned so much about the technique of fashion.  My notebook is full of new terms I can use to describe garments, and I understand how to create a look that flatters a model’s body.  These are skills which I can use to create clothes and take with me into the world of fashion.

I’ve learned to be discerning and precise, and not to give up–even when you think you’ve slashed a garment to bits! Although it may be nice to sleep in on Saturdays for the next few weeks, I’m going to miss FIT so much!  I love the sense of accomplishment that comes when I work hard on a project all morning.  I’ll miss being in such a creative environment every weekend.  It’s safe to say I’ll definitely be looking into FIT for the Fall Semester!  I’m eagerly awaiting an opportunity to put my new fashion knowledge to use…

Thanks to everyone for their support of this blog and you’ll hear from me soon!  You can follow my daily inspirations and musings at http://lesfillesdelamode.tumblr.com/
