Henley, the Japanese Chin who is adopted by Lulu Ziminski, “fashion maven extraordinaire” is the creation of our own style maven and MFA candidate, Julie Muszynski. Henley- and Julie- get a special mention on Petite Sophisticate. Henley enjoys the life of luxury in New York, and on Safari in his second adventure- but look out, Henley is going Hollywood soon after Julie and her class visit LA this June! Weare star-struck, Julie!

Where Whimsical Worlds Collide: Faculty Aya Kakeda one of Three Woman Show

MF Gallery, Brooklyn, NY is proud to present a new show of paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures and installations by three international female artists: Nicoz Balboa (Italy/France) Aya Kakeda, (Japan) & Angie Mason (U.S.A.) These artists, all known for creating colorful and whimsical worlds where animals interact with girls and all sorts of fantastical characters, will have new art for sale, and each artist will also be creating a permanent mural in the entranceway to the gallery.

Aya Kakeda was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan and is now living and working in Brooklyn, New York. She earned a BFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design and an MFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. In her art, she often depicts an imaginary place she created, called ToTai Island, and the creatures that inhabit it. For this new show at MF Gallery, she illustrates the microscopic world of ToTai island; the girl (named “Micro-Chan”) who lives inside of the creatures on the island, and her story. She will be showing gouache paintings and ceramic sculpture installations. This is Aya’s first year with us at FIT and we couldn’t be happier! Aya is also the recipient of the Silver Medal from the Society of Illustrators Annual Show. What an year for you, Aya!

FIT Faculty in NYT!

By day, Anelle Miller is the Director of the Society of Illustrators in New York. Dennis Dittrich is the President. They have turned the place on its ear- there is not a night when there is not a drawing session, a lecture, film, dinner, trivia contest, or happy hour. How fortunate for us that by night, Anelle and Dennis are on our faculty. Anelle teaches Business and Promotion Strategies, specializing in marketing and grant writing. Dennis commandeers our Visual Thesis classes, expertly steering our students to producing their culminating body of work. Well, how fantastic is this? The New York Times featured Anelle today and quoted Dennis- and btw, mentioned another faculty member, Monika Maniecki for a lecture on creating art on an iPad, that was first delivered at FIT.This is a wonderful article and a great acknowledgement for someone who delivers 1000% wherever she is.

We are really proud of you, Murray!

There are certain people in this world who need no last name- they are known as the icons that they are when you simply say their first names- faculty member Murray (Tinkelman, for those of you who need to get up to speed) is one of those- reknown illustrator, lecturer, educator, and on a personal note, incredible life-long mentor to this Chair, and many of our faculty. We are so, so very proud to tell you that Murray will be inducted into the Society of Illustrator’s Hall of Fame this coming June- and that’s not all- Murray has also been awarded an honorary Doctorate degree from Kendall College of Art & Design. Congratulations, Dr. Tinkelman! We are so happy that you are with us!
