The headlines bear out your statement too often unfortunately, telling tales of designers who sold their name, brand, and business only to find out later that the unintended outcomes (on their part) degraded at the very least their good name.

It seems to me consumers unconsciously make brands a part of their own emotional identity. That partly explains brand loyalty; also the popularity of mere advertisements.
