Learn How To Style Web Pages With CSS Starting 3/2

By , February 25, 2014 8:00 am

CSS

What is CSS, you ask?

It’s Cascading Style Sheets and it is what designers use to style web pages. With CSS we add art direction – typography, layout, color and background images to our pages.

My next CSS class on FIT campus  starts Sunday, March 2 and ends the following Sunday. We go from 10 AM – 5Pm and if you’re nice to me  I will even let you take me to lunch.

Here are the topics we do with hands on exercises and demonstrations:

1. Smart ways to set font size.
2. Working with color and background properties.
3. Tried and true layout techniques.
4. Rollover navigation without javascript.

Plus we will get a good look at what Responsive Design is all about.

Yes, CSS3 is built into what I teach.

Since most web sites today are built upon a pre-existing framework I will introduce you to that idea as well. And if you have ever seen me create a customized WordPress theme and want to do it yourself this class is a must!!

This class is good for anyone but web design and developer wannabes wool love it the most. You will need to know some HTML before you take this class.

4 Reason To LOL About Learning Online

By , March 19, 2013 8:21 am

Thinking of taking an online class, like my Web Design class, here at FIT?

Let me give you some reasons that you will not see any where else on why learning online just might be fore you.

  1. You can eat anything you want in class. Order a pizza and a coke and spill it over your keyboard. No one will tell you that you can’t have food in the lab.
  2. You can wear anything you want. Fashion is totally up to you when you take an online class. Work in your T-shirt or even a little less.
  3. When you get up at 2am, rather than eat a piece of chocolate cake, you can feed your brain with something good to learn.
  4. Didn’t swallow a bottle of Scope just before class? Not to worry. Bad breath is not a problem.

By , July 12, 2011 2:36 pm

If you are writing the snappy stuff of Hot Topics Insider – or if you’re the casual reader – you just may want to know how to use WordPress.

WordPress is about as hot as a summer sun gets when it comes to Content Management Systems for web sites. And it happens to be what is used to make and manage the pages here on Hot Topics Insider.

On July 28th at 7PM I’ll be doing a one hour webinar. Here’s a little video of just a few of things I will be demonstrating.

Details And Registration

Here’s What You’ll Be Learning In The Webinar

  2. How to create and manage pages and posts – and the difference between the two.
  3. How to use and work with sidebar widgets.
  4. Where the style comes from in a WordPress site.
  5. The power of plugins – where to find them and how to get them to work with a WordPress site.

What’s Hot And What’s Shot

By , June 21, 2011 8:27 am

Google Trends

I’ll bet you didn’t know that Google has (what doesn’t Google have) a nice tool to tell us what is on everyone’s mind.

It’s Google Trends. Just enter a keyword and Google will do all the heavy lifting.

Keep in mind that this isn’t a perfect science but it will give you  a real good notion of what people are thinking of.

Here are a few interesting keywords to try out just to get the hang of it.

  • Anthony Weiner – candle just lit and it’s about to go out.
  • Cropped pants – Heading in the up direction.
  • Barack Obama – Huge spike when he’s running for President. Once he’s President, ok, we know the guy.
  • Maxi dresses – Very hot a couple of years ago.

When you get a result following your query you’ll see that you can click on links that will tell your more about your term at various points in time. How cool is that?!?!?!

Do you have a favorite Google tool? Maybe it’s something that you love but a lot of people don’t know about. Tell us by leaving  a comment below. OR maybe you found a very interesting result with Google Trends.  Tell  us!!

Where To Learn CSS

By , June 7, 2011 10:03 am

This one’s a layup.

I will be teaching (CTD 605) Web Design: CSS (that’s Cascading Style Sheets) on campus starting Tuesday, June, 21 from 6:20 to 9:10. The class meets for six consecutive Tuesdays and it’s not just useful — it’s too much fun!!

If you know a little XHTML (HTML is fine too) then you are good for this class but don’t take it unless you have some comfort with that.

The course is required if you are working on a Web Design Certificate through The Enterprise Center. Heck, I think it should be required if all you do is surf the web. it’s that important.

CSS is all about a web page’s style, layout and typography. CSS is about making great web sites!!

Just A Few Things You Will Learn

* Layout pages without tables (Yippee!!)
* How to set font-sizes in pixels or em units
* How to create modern navigation interfaces
* How to use background images
* A quick look into the future of CSS – that’s CSS3

To get a sense of what CSS is see What Is CSS?

Web 3.0 Is Coming To A Screen Near You

By , May 24, 2011 7:28 am

Web 3.0

Sooner or later you are going to be hearing about Web 3.0 if you haven’t already.

Just when you were getting comfortable with Web 2.0 now along comes the next incarnation of the online communications experience.  As you might expect we’re not talking just about desktops and laptops but all sorts of mobile devices that you know about or are about to be launched.

Although it was never called Web 1.0 those bad old days were marked by half baked browsers that should never have been launched and design practices that were the best they could be given the state of the art of the time.  Gray page backgrounds, blue links and black text got it all started almost 20 years ago.

It took me awhile to figure out what Web 2.0 was. People were saying it was about social media and interpersonal communications. The best way I can describe 2.0 is what it gave us – the social networks, blogs, online communities and tons of video.

Web 3.0? Given the coming updates to HTML and CSS it will radically change what we think of as “the web.”

Here is what I think it’s going to be.
