“Murder Was The Case That They Gave Me” -Snoop Dogg

Hello Fashionistas,

Last week was a big one for all of us here at F.I.T. Say it with me, “jury time”! A lot of us were working around the clock and had time for very little.

And believe it or not, some of us didn’t even make it downstairs to the Great Hall for the jury to give our garment a verdict on whether or not it will be in the show.

Where did I stand in the midst of all this beautiful chaos? Upstairs, mad salty, (insert that line from Clueless from the driver’s ed scene) but alive to see another day and continue my thesis by year’s end.

MY PERSONAL JOURNAL...

MY PERSONAL JOURNAL…

The synopsis of my collection is the exuberance, opulence, and pure sophistication of the 1920s with an emphasis on “The Great Gatsby” written by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

So far, so good with my use of the finest cottons used for high-end mens shirting such as broad cloth and Oxford, along with the proper accents such as a silk taffeta with Ascot and cummerband. It was great to communicate so closely with vendors and place orders for send outs to save time on things such as pintucks and pleating. Don’t worry I still sewed my little heart out!

SENIOR THESIS LOOK NO.1

SENIOR THESIS LOOK NO.1

I will admit that the smell of defeat has grazed my skin just as much as a bottle of Yves Saint Laurent’s L’Homme Eau de Toilette spray, but the aroma has yet to become neutral. I am not sure of the lesson learned, but I do know this much, having a complete collection means a lot to me and will be so beautiful to behold in the end.

A SNEAK PEEK AT MY ROUGH SKETCHES...

A SNEAK PEEK AT MY ROUGH SKETCHES…

While the lucky few chosen to have their garments in the “Future of Fashion” show are scurrying about doing their fittings with professional models from some of the best modeling agencies in New York, the rest of us are nearing the end of our academic careers, finishing our senior thesis, and moving on to bigger and better things. Hard work pays off and I have a lot more to do so stay tuned…

>.< Too much knitting.

There is one week until we get pre judged on our garments which means we need 90% done . Ugh. Today I think the coffee got the best of me because after about 11 hours in the knitting lab today my hands are still shaking. I was having a hard time picking up dropped stitches. It has definitely paid off though. I got a ton of my trims done today and my dress is almost completely assembled. It’s worth the shaky vision and twitching muscles.

So here is where I have progressed at this moment!

My intarsia sweater is basically done! Just need to bury some ends

I’m looking pretty great too right? ok not really

Today I also knit down a bunch of trims and linked them on the linker!

I was really scared of this machine until today when I realized it indeed is a godsend.

And finally this is where my dress has gotten after my full day in the lab!

So far I think I’m on track! As long as I can stick to my schedule and be preoductive the rest of the lab days this week I believe I will succeed at finishing!

Wish me luck

send me coffee

and sugar

:)

*Spring Break 2013*

So I’m on day 4 or maybe 5 of Spring Break which means day 5 of being stuck at school in the knitting lab.. think I’m starting to lose my marbles. Anyways I have gotten sooo much done this week though. It is so incredibly relaxing to only have to worry about knitting this week. No class or work pressure and just knitting feels so rewarding.

This week I finished a bunch of my graphs that I need to knit down the rest of my garments. I also knit my jacquard for my dress and knit my sweater on Stoll and I am currently putting together all the pieces. Today felt useless though. I have been waking up so early every day and running to school to grab a machine that I think it is finally wearing into me. I reattached my neck trim 4 times before I got it to be what I wanted. My mind is slowly melting away and my appearance and eating habits are definitely affected as well -___-.

Can’t wait until I can just enjoy the nice weather and take care of myself again haha.

Anyways here’s where I’m at with my intarsia sweater currently!

Keep you updated for more soon!

Hello everyone,

I am a sportswear senior, and currently working on my senior collection as well as all my fellow seniors are on track of. The spring break has finally come, however I cannot say that I am taking this time for having a vacation. Still, it fells like we have a space between classes to focus on our work and think clearly. I recommend you who are staying at campus and in the city to take good rest, and progress in their work, which is what I am doing. Don’t let internships, cold weather and cold or flue to take you down!

The previous weeks we had our critic’s visit, and the model fitting, and I assume everyone is almost (or more) half way through. I started seeing too many interesting works. We have too many talented people at FIT, so it is quite interesting to be involved in this event, and witness the process of these beautiful garments from start to the show time. Here are some images I took while we were having our model fitting. Our professors are helping a lot, and also, Prof. Paula Varsalona are visiting the classes from time to time to help us on our draping and pattern work. And here’s a tip, she is on campus for a little time during the spring break, so if you are at school and need some help, you may take advantage of this!

Hope everyone have a peaceful and healthy break and come back as eager to work as they can!

Pre-judging and Judging days

Pre-judging and Judging day!

Last Monday was a stressful day! After spending the night finishing to knit my collar, I had a 45 minutes nap before getting in a cab and heading to school. We all put our our outfits on dress forms and waited for our critic Reiko to pre-judge our looks. We left the classroom for an hour, the time she needed to carefully look at every-one’s work and choose a critic award winner, and eventually deselect some looks for the judging day.
We all came back, dead tired, waiting to quickly pack up our things and have a little nap.
Reiko said she was very impressed with our class and our designs. We went much further than the expected. She would have liked to give many of us an award and added that it was very hard to pick a single one.
The winner was announced, and to a big surprise, it was me! So kudos for that. I am very happy to be the winner – as I have never won any fashion prize or award before. She added that the reason she picked me was that everytime I met her, I had developed my ideas. Also, I seriously listened to all her advices, stepping back from my original ideas and design, looking at my work from an objective point of view, and changing what needed to be changed. Indeed, at the beginning of the process, I was experimenting with plastic very much. I wanted to “glue” plastic bags directly onto my fabrics with latex. The idea was interesting, but not looking as attractive as it may sound. I had many ideas, but eventually, they were all over the place. A few weeks before I started knitting the final fabrics, I decided to change the colors and leave behind anything that looked too “crafty”. I still used the plastic, but knitting black garbage bags.

On Tuesday night, we set up all of our pre-selected outfits in the great hall at school. They were judged for the fashion show (May 4th) and a cotton award was chosen for each specialization track. My roomie and friend Elin got the knitwear cotton award with her amazing cotton paper handknit jacket.

Now it’s spring break and we are looking forward for some chill time! Take care and enjoy the pictures!

RESULTS!!!

Ladies and Gentleman of all ages!  The time has come for the big reveal!  The results are in!  I am pleased to report that intimate apparel managed to get 15 garments into the show this year!  A HUGE congratulations is in order for Francielle, who took home the grand prize of $2,000 for the Cotton Award!

As for me, I managed to get BOTH ensembles into the show! Not going to lie, I totally jumped up and down when I found out!  After three months of grueling hours of hand sewing, the work paid off and I will get to see my creations on real models, wearing real heels, on a real runway to real music, with real photographers from the press taking their pictures!!!!  EEEK!!!!

What’s next?  PACKING!  I leave in 4 hours for the airport!  I am flying to Miami where my family and I will be spending the next week aboard a cruise ship sailing through the eastern caribbean!  All I can say is I NEED this vacation!  One of the small side effects of attending FIT is that you don’t actually have a spring break.  The last 3 years, spring break has merely been a chance to catch up on other work!  Sophomore year we were finishing our garments for the AAS exhibit, and last year I was sewing garments for the Lululemon Athletica Urban Yogini Competition!  This year I am being whisked away on an early graduation present!  So I’m signing off for the next week!  Here’s to hoping I come back with a tan! CHEERS!

Holy Crap- We Did Good!

After a grueling 3 months of what some might compare to a fiery pit of hell, our garments were presented today to our critic, Flora Nikrooz.  I can not begin to explain the caliber of work that was on display.  Each garment was unique and truly depicted a part of the designer.  After a brief introduction with Ms. Nikrooz, we were asked to leave the room for an hour while the professor and our critic looked over our garments and decided what would continue on to judging on Wednesday.  After stuffing myself with pizza and a smoothie, I returned to the room feeling better than I had in a long time.  I was full, rested, and felt a large surge of accomplishment.  We were each taken into the room individually, where we were given feedback, suggestions, and told if one or both of our garments would be continuing.  Drum roll please… Both my garments are continuing onto judging on Wednesday!  Ms. Nikrooz was absolutely smitten with my Cotton ensemble and actually offered me a job on the spot!  Of course my mind was in no shape to make a decision like that on the spot, but I was extremely flattered by her words.  She said she truly feels that I am going to change this industry.  Can you ask for a greater compliment as a designer?

When everyone finished their critiques, the entire class was called back into the class for a few parting words, and the announcement of the critic award winner.  Ms. Nikrooz only had nice things to say about her experiences with us and our garments.  So did I end up with book-ends? (I already have a critic award trophy from the 4th semester Associates Exhibition)  No, but a big Congratulations is in order for Nathalie Quirin!  Her ensemble of black chiffon and peacock feathers won her the Critic Award for BFA!

Wednesday brings a new day of doing it all again.  We have to arrive at school at 7 AM to put our garments on the forms for judging.  Then we wait as the slowest and most grueling 48 hours of our lives passes by.  At some point on Friday, the magical list of those students who are in the Fashion Show will be posted.  One professor commented that it is the worst day to be at school because of all the upset and angry students.  I couldn’t agree more.  I intern on Friday, but maybe I’ll take my lunch break to come peak at the list, or just stop by after work.  Until then, I plan on the next few days being full of rest, relaxation, booze, and a hair cut.

I am including a short video scan of all the garments that were displayed today to the Critic. I think you will agree- they are “Beyond.”

And in the Final Hours… She slept.

Come one, come all, D-Day has arrived!  In a mere 11 hours, we will be completely done with our ensembles for the fashion show and en route to the nearest bar to celebrate.  This experience has truly brought us together not only as classmates, but also as drinking buddies.  I haven’t been to a bar since at least February, and am happy to say that comes to an end tomorrow!  There are many last minute details happening in the work room, but by 2 pm tomorrow there will be 34 completed garments in room C714… I hope. For those who have been following my progress from the beginning, I am including a video of my finished first and second ensembles.  We joke that one is the modern bride, and the other is the 1800′s bride. I’m sure you’ll be able to tell which is which.  For the world to see, here are the ensembles that have captured my creativity, tears, sweat, ambitions, and probably a small part of my soul.  Enjoy.

In my four years at FIT, it has been a rare occasion NOT to have to pull an all-nighter before a term garment is due.  But tonight I am proud to say, “I sleep.”

And one more week to go!

Most of us didn’t sleep from Sunday to Monday and those who have, I bet it’s not much!

We all brought our outfits on Monday morning and showed them to Reiko, our critic and professor Skocir, our collection mentor. We met upstairs, on the third floor (we call it the draping room) instead of downstairs, our knitting lab. In the draping room, every student has two forms and can put the outfits and present them to the critic and the professor. This our last week before judging day!!! Reiko and P.Skocir carefully looked at our work and gave us final suggestions. By next Monday, everything has to be ONE HUNDRED % finished!  Of course, we are about to flip out, but surely not as much as the other knitwear class who has everything due TOMORROW!!! I can’t wait to have a look at what they are doing!

In the meanwhile, enjoy those pictures. I will post an entire gallery next week, and will focus on presenting some of students work. At the moment, everything is still a work in progress and everything can change until the last minute!

You know you are best friends when…

….your professor tells you that you need to change your fabric when you are done with your dress and you critic is coming on Wednesday and you are taking a bunch of other classes and interning and you cry for like 4 hours because you are stressed and dancing like a doofus makes you feel better. —yes I know this is a ridiculous run on sentence, it’s called word vomit when your stress level is at my percentage! Anyways…this is a small video I put together today with my bff Grace and I literally going “Crazy” over school and deciding to have a little dancing fun to burn off some steam.

Sorry this is a short post, my life is a little whacky right now, as you can tell. (Garment photos will be coming soon!!!)

Oh ya, feel free to laugh!

IS IT SPRING BREAK YET?!?!?!?!
