“Murder Was The Case That They Gave Me” -Snoop Dogg

Hello Fashionistas,

Last week was a big one for all of us here at F.I.T. Say it with me, “jury time”! A lot of us were working around the clock and had time for very little.

And believe it or not, some of us didn’t even make it downstairs to the Great Hall for the jury to give our garment a verdict on whether or not it will be in the show.

Where did I stand in the midst of all this beautiful chaos? Upstairs, mad salty, (insert that line from Clueless from the driver’s ed scene) but alive to see another day and continue my thesis by year’s end.

MY PERSONAL JOURNAL...

MY PERSONAL JOURNAL…

The synopsis of my collection is the exuberance, opulence, and pure sophistication of the 1920s with an emphasis on “The Great Gatsby” written by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

So far, so good with my use of the finest cottons used for high-end mens shirting such as broad cloth and Oxford, along with the proper accents such as a silk taffeta with Ascot and cummerband. It was great to communicate so closely with vendors and place orders for send outs to save time on things such as pintucks and pleating. Don’t worry I still sewed my little heart out!

SENIOR THESIS LOOK NO.1

SENIOR THESIS LOOK NO.1

I will admit that the smell of defeat has grazed my skin just as much as a bottle of Yves Saint Laurent’s L’Homme Eau de Toilette spray, but the aroma has yet to become neutral. I am not sure of the lesson learned, but I do know this much, having a complete collection means a lot to me and will be so beautiful to behold in the end.

A SNEAK PEEK AT MY ROUGH SKETCHES...

A SNEAK PEEK AT MY ROUGH SKETCHES…

While the lucky few chosen to have their garments in the “Future of Fashion” show are scurrying about doing their fittings with professional models from some of the best modeling agencies in New York, the rest of us are nearing the end of our academic careers, finishing our senior thesis, and moving on to bigger and better things. Hard work pays off and I have a lot more to do so stay tuned…

I cannot even explain how exhausted I have been lately. Every morning, like clockwork, I get up at 7:30 and make my way to school. Tons of iced coffee and sugar and a 13 hr shift later I am back in bed and setting my alarm to take on the next day. My fingers are bleeding from needles and machines, my hands are shakey, and my visions blurry. I don’t even know how many consecutive days I have been at school/work. Don’t get me wrong, the ONLY reason I can do this is because I love what I’m doing and I love seeing it finally come together. I have just a few little things to fix with my garments so I am happy and am finally back on track! Our pre-judging is Wednesday and I am starting to get really nervous. My class is really strong and have all worked so hard! I just hope I have worked hard enough to make it to judging! Anyway it works out though, I am happy with what I have done and I know I’ve worked to hard to get here so I feel accomplished!

This week I’ll grab some pics of my friends amazing work! I am so proud of all of us making it this far.. even though it meant skipping some classes and ruining our social lives..

Here’s my two looks at there current state!

I need to get them polished and ready for display so they look fancy you know?

Anyways I am going to bed .. long few days ahead and I need the only time I get for myself!

Night!

Casting on this week

We knitwear students were lucky enough to receive a bunch of free yarn courtesy of Lion Brand and we received a bunch of it on Wednesday!
Here are some of the yarns that I got and spun onto some cones to be ready for the machines!

There’s some really beautiful, soft mohair in there. mmmm soft

Then I started testing out some of the yarns on the brother machine.

This weekend though I was able to get back on the stoll machine and knit down my intarsia to find out how it would run. After a long morning of setting up the program and machine, I finally got to knitting on the machine only to find that there were a few glitches leaving my first knit down with a bunch of holes and runs, but, of course, nothing’s ever perfect on the first try now is it? With some fine tuning and revision of yarns I was able to come up with something! There are still a few dropped stitches and the yarns will be a little different but it’s a step in the right direction!

Hopefully I will be able to program my sweater into this computer this week and knit it down soon with my cotton yarns!

Time is winding down so quickly already and things are so busy trying to find time for school, interning, and working… or daydreaming about what I’m going to do after school or thinking about how nice is must be on a sunny and foreign coast right now.
I digress
Just hope I have enough coffee to make it through these next few weeks!

^.^

Welcome to the wonderful world of knitting!

Hey guys!

I’m Aimee and I’m here to take you inside the basement of F.I.T. …. the knitting dungeon! So let me brief you on what I will be working on this semester! I am working on some pieces inspired by the rainforest. There’s a lot of prints and fun color.. well bubblegum colored things if you think that defines fun. Anyways, below are my sketches for the show… (subject to multiple changes along this journey)

Now that you have an idea of what my style looks like I can show you some of the technical work behind this and what I have been working on this past week!

Below are the patterns I am drafting to mock up my prototypes. fun fun!

and I also got a bunch of cotton yarn in!

but I believe there is a lot more yarn I am going to have to purchase that I’m going to have to test out for these garments!

Today was a fun day though! I started working on my intarsia sweater and I’m really excited about it! I’m using the Stoll machine to knit down the sweater so my work is all computer generated!
Here is the image I used for the sweater exported into 4 colors which will translate into 4 yarn colors..

and then here it is translated into the stoll program

Unfortunately I was not able to knit down the swatch today because the file I’ve made on the computer is quite complicated to knit and will take a little more time than I bargained for, but nonetheless it shall be done!

Will keep up with you guys through the week!

Ask me questions if you have them! I’d love to give you guys a chance to have all your questions answered, too whether it be about knitting, or fashion, or F.I.T. or what I had for lunch, or if my knitwear girls and I refer to ourselves as knitty biddys.. WHATEVER YOU GOT. sky’s the limit!
