“Murder Was The Case That They Gave Me” -Snoop Dogg

Hello Fashionistas,

Last week was a big one for all of us here at F.I.T. Say it with me, “jury time”! A lot of us were working around the clock and had time for very little.

And believe it or not, some of us didn’t even make it downstairs to the Great Hall for the jury to give our garment a verdict on whether or not it will be in the show.

Where did I stand in the midst of all this beautiful chaos? Upstairs, mad salty, (insert that line from Clueless from the driver’s ed scene) but alive to see another day and continue my thesis by year’s end.

MY PERSONAL JOURNAL...

MY PERSONAL JOURNAL…

The synopsis of my collection is the exuberance, opulence, and pure sophistication of the 1920s with an emphasis on “The Great Gatsby” written by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

So far, so good with my use of the finest cottons used for high-end mens shirting such as broad cloth and Oxford, along with the proper accents such as a silk taffeta with Ascot and cummerband. It was great to communicate so closely with vendors and place orders for send outs to save time on things such as pintucks and pleating. Don’t worry I still sewed my little heart out!

SENIOR THESIS LOOK NO.1

SENIOR THESIS LOOK NO.1

I will admit that the smell of defeat has grazed my skin just as much as a bottle of Yves Saint Laurent’s L’Homme Eau de Toilette spray, but the aroma has yet to become neutral. I am not sure of the lesson learned, but I do know this much, having a complete collection means a lot to me and will be so beautiful to behold in the end.

A SNEAK PEEK AT MY ROUGH SKETCHES...

A SNEAK PEEK AT MY ROUGH SKETCHES…

While the lucky few chosen to have their garments in the “Future of Fashion” show are scurrying about doing their fittings with professional models from some of the best modeling agencies in New York, the rest of us are nearing the end of our academic careers, finishing our senior thesis, and moving on to bigger and better things. Hard work pays off and I have a lot more to do so stay tuned…

Round 1- Both Looks!

The critics eliminations were this week, and both of my garments made it past the first round!!! I have quite a few things to do to make sure they are perfect this weekend. :-) Wednesday is judging for the actual fashion show and I couldn’t be more nervous! I made another video this week, woohoo! (Take a look at the entire classes garments!!!)

Hope you enjoy and more importantly…LAUGH!

You know you are best friends when…

….your professor tells you that you need to change your fabric when you are done with your dress and you critic is coming on Wednesday and you are taking a bunch of other classes and interning and you cry for like 4 hours because you are stressed and dancing like a doofus makes you feel better. —yes I know this is a ridiculous run on sentence, it’s called word vomit when your stress level is at my percentage! Anyways…this is a small video I put together today with my bff Grace and I literally going “Crazy” over school and deciding to have a little dancing fun to burn off some steam.

Sorry this is a short post, my life is a little whacky right now, as you can tell. (Garment photos will be coming soon!!!)

Oh ya, feel free to laugh!

IS IT SPRING BREAK YET?!?!?!?!

Week of Wonders

This has been a LONG week! Full of interning, applying to jobs, fittings and of course being goofy with my bff’s. Too many things going on, this week…I will let my video speak for me. (at the end of the movie is what happens after a long day of interning and schooling when all you want is Cold Stone and the line is around the store!—oh yea, that’s Martha and Grace!)

Oh, good news!….Interview next week!!! :-)

Ensemble #1, check.

Fashion Sketch

After a long and gorgeous weekend being cooped up in my tiny apartment, ensemble #1, my baby, is done.

This past  Saturday morning most of us came into class to get our robes approved by the professor. It was also the time to make any last minute corrections before the due date (today, monday). I embarked upon the hem that took a good 15 hours (most likely, I like to be a little dramatic). Of course, this too, was to be beaded (advice from the professor). I ripped my precious silk chiffon into narrow strips to make the edge trim. Something about ripping your fabric makes the process all that much more satisfying.

I finished the beading for my corset finally (hooray!), and am halfway done with beads on the robe. I love to do beading on my garments, and get very ambitious about it. The people at Bead World on 38th and Broadway know me very well. Sometimes I get a little regretful when I chose the tiniest glass seed bead possible to use. Of course, it takes A LOT longer than anticipated, but in the end it is very much worth it.

Today was presentation day for grading. Check out some close-ups.

The Beading

Presentation day is not the day that our garments are chosen for the show. It is the day where we must be 98% done and we submit our garments to the professor for grading. If need be, corrections in fit can be made or suggestions on how to make your garment better. We all are usually hoping that there is no corrections to be made, but some of us aren’t so lucky. My sleeves needed to be more voluminous than what I made, and the professor and critic strongly suggested that I re-do them. I will do it, not that I want to, and nothing is actually wrong with the ones I have, but it will make my garment better. The work is never over, and my wallet is always hurting.

All of the ladies in the Intimate Apparel specialization are very talented and do just as much work as I do to meet all the deadlines. Here is a presentation from my good friend Madison. She made a beautiful lace body suit with a silk chiffon robe (check out the creative key hole and lace applique, love it). She takes risks in her designs to stand out from the crowd and she always tries to stay true to her aesthetic, which is not always easy. Some corrections aside, she did an amazing job, look for her cotton ensemble to follow!

Wednesday we are starting our 2nd ensembles. Mostly everyone has decided to participate in the Cotton Inc. competition where your garments must be made out of 95% cotton. One person from each specialization will be chosen as a winner, and receive a $2000 prize. Intimate apparel is hard to make in fabrics that do not stretch, for fit and comforts sake, but some people have already made their garments, and they came out beautifully.
