Sergio Guadarrama (Fashion Design ’07) of Celestino told us what inspired his S/S 2012 collection and how winning Polyvore’s Emerging Designers Series competition will provide a far-reaching platform for his designs. Be sure to catch the live webcast of Polyvore Live, a first-of-its-kind fashion show featuring collections by four FIT alumni, on February 13, 2012 at 6:30 pm!
How did you hear about the emerging designer competition?
I received an e-mail from the F.I.T. alumni relations department. I definitely keep in touch with them; they’re so great about pushing their alumni.
What made you decide to submit your work?
When I read that Polyvore was holding this competition, I realized how big a platform this could be for me as a young, emerging designer, and how much it could benefit Celestino.
How did you choose pieces from your collection?
We selected pieces that would appeal more towards the Polyvore demographic– younger people interested in evening wear and the contemporary market.
What was your inspiration for this collection?
My Spring/Summer ’12 collection was inspired by porcelain dolls. I wanted to take women back to a time when anything was possible, to make them feel youthful and beautiful.
Has Polyvore.com played a role in inspiring any of your work or personal sense of style?
Yes, it’s an amazing platform to express your own style and discover different points of view from millions of fashionistas around the world.
What has been your reaction to thousands of users’ sets that have been created using your products?
The response was truly amazing. I’m so happy that Polyvore has given me this opportunity. I was excited to see how the Polyvore community mixed and matched Celestino looks – they did a great job!
What was it about laynaelyse’s set that made it your favorite?
The set she created really embodied what the Spring/Summer ’12 collection was all about. She had a great eye for balance and proportion. I was impressed.
How do you feel about the upcoming Polyvore Live show?
I’m feeding off the energy and excitement, knowing there are countless people looking forward to seeing my collection. It’s going to be an incredible show.
Is there anything else you’d like to add about this experience?
I want to thank Polyvore, F.I.T. and Covergirl for giving me this opportunity.
