How to survive your first day

Starting college is a nerve racking experience. Most people find the first day to be filled with anxiety because they don’t know anyone and there is so much going on, but I promise you will make it through!

The first thing you should do before your classes start is explore campus! Make sure you know where your classes are , where the bathrooms, cafeteria, computer labs, and extra help are located. Just walk around take it all in and get ready to be an official college student.

Next, make friends in your classes! Especially your liberals , they are mixed with tons of different people of all different majors, and grade levels. Don’t be afraid to talk to someone random, trust me they want to make friends just as badly as you do. But if you don’t make any friends right away don’t worry there is plenty of time to join a club, get involved, or introduce yourself to someone out and about other then in class.

One thing that is a must let your parents fuss over you. I know your a college student now but your a college student at FIT and your parents are so beyond proud so embrace It and thank them for encouraging you so much. You will be thankful by your senior year I promise!

Another is pack head phones and a snack for your first day. It is definitely overwhelming at first and you need some down time between classes or even just walking to class to listen to some music or watch a quick episode of something on Netflix. Give yourself a chance to relax and unwind, plus who doesn’t like snacks. Most people think my bag is filled with books, but they thought wrong I have snacks on snacks (haha).

Lastly, wear something your comfortable in. I made the mistake of wearing heels my first day freshman year and my feet were killing me by my second class and I had to get up and introduce myself. I must have looked ridiculous wobbling up to the front of the class. You want to be able to be cool, calm and collected.

Any other suggestions for the first day?

Best of Luck,

Camping or Glamping?

Hey Everyone,

So as we only have a little less then two weeks left to enjoy our summer. I took one of my last trips before its time to buckle down.

Canoe

About 10 of me and my friends went camping down the Delaware water gap. If you haven’t been I highly suggest it. We took canoes about 8 miles down the water gap and found a spot to camp out for the night. The water was as clear as can be. ( For me that’s a big deal , because I will not go in water that I cant see, Haha).

Canoeing

First thing I would suggest though if you go in the summer.. wear sunscreen. I made the mistake of not doing so and I got burnt to a crisp. Second thing bring something that you can sketch with or paint with. The natural beauty on this trip was breath taking and I wanted to capture every aspect anyway I could.

Sun RiseThis was what I woke up to, I think I sat on a log just staring at this until the sun fully immersed itself into the sky. It was breath taking, you never know what you can discover in your own backyard. So before the summer ends , get out, explore!

What have you done this summer? Any Fun plans before it ends?

#FallGoals

Hey everyone,

With each post , the fall semester is getting closer and closer. For me this will be my last “first day” of school. I am beyond excited but I have a lot of things I would like to accomplish before my last day.

1. Get straight A’s the whole semester. I am taking 15 credits , which is a lot less than I normally do. All of my classes are online except one so I will be in school once a week.

2. Get involved. It is my last semester and the last chance ill have to go to all the great things FIT plans constantly so I want to take full advantage.

3. Get promoted or start a new job. At my current job I am trying to decide if I should take a promotion or look for a new job since I am fresh out of college. I guess we will see once it is closer to December.

4. Find my Niche. Being an ITM student I have so many different directions I could go with my career and as I finish my last few classes, I hope I will find more out about which area I want to go in.

Last but not least

Number 5. Graduate! I feel like it was just yesterday it was the summer of 2012 and I was at school for accepted students day with my day. They gave me a class of 2016 shirt and I felt like that was so far away. My life in college and out has changed so much since that moment. But FIT has molded me into a fantastic business woman and I couldn’t be more proud to say I am going to soon be an alumni.

My best advice for this semester is take it slow, enjoy being in college because before you know it, it will be your last first day too.

The wonders of the job world

Hi everyone,

I hope you are enjoying your summer vacation. Its flying by , it felt like just yesterday we started summer. But for me that only means one thing, I am only a few months away from graduating and becoming a true full time employee.

With every degree you wonder , am I going to get a job after college? What jobs are out there? Who will hire me? and the answer is when your an FIT student jobs are endless! We are creative and unique people and that’s exactly why we chose FIT as the school for us.

jobsearch

Currently I am about to have two degrees from FIT. I have a background and associates in interior design and I am about to graduate with my bachelors in ITM or international trade and marketing.  With both backgrounds my opportunities for jobs are everywhere! When people look at my resume from a marketing stand point they love that I have an interior design background, it shows my creative side and also that I am a good planner.

Some jobs that I have been applying to for after school include a little bit of both. One that I am really interested in right now is a company that manufactures bedding and ships them to the US internationally. This is great for me because I understand it from all aspects. Some other jobs are international account manager, strategic planner, event coordinator, marketing coordinator , importer/ exporter for both national and international companies. I may even end up staying at my current job which is a software company , being the head of sales, or something related to that or marketing.

My best advice is to interview for a few different options when looking for the perfect full time job for you. Feel out the company , see if its the right fit for you. Start this process about 2-3 months before you graduate, that way you aren’t left in the dark with nothing to do once school ends.

FIT also offers many services to help you find a job after school, as well as you can always reach out to us or even past professors.

Good Luck with your hunt :), and I hope this semester is the best one yet for you !

Goals for the Semester

Welcome back to the Admissions Blog!  To anyone that may be coming across the site for the first time, I’m Ashley and I am a senior photography major and art history minor!  If you are an incoming student, returning student, or anyone that is interested in applying to FIT, let us know if you have any questions or any topics that you want discussed!  We are here to help!

With the new semester upon us, I always try to think about what I want to accomplish over the next 15 weeks, whether it’s inside or outside of the classroom.  Here are some of my goals for my 7th semester here at FIT:

  • Be proud of the photographic work that I create
  • Create work for myself
  • Make time to ensure that I still get to hang out with friends and take time for myself
  • Go to a pumpkin patch
  • Try at least 4 new restaurants
  • Volunteer at an obstacle race, marathon, etc
  • Explore a new part of the city
  • Take advantage of the 2 for $20 movie tickets sold in Student Life
  • Breathe and remind myself that any stress that I am feeling is temporary
  • Have fun!

What are some of your semester goals?  I am looking forward to blogging and updating you all about life here at FIT!

Ashley
