How Important is My LinkedIn?!

Hello there! Hope you all had a great week so far. Midterms are in full swing and I know how stressful that can be. But don’t worry you’ll get through it! Today I thought I would talk to you a little about your LinkedIn profile, because like most freshman I had absolutely no idea how crucial my LinkedIn profile was.

It never really occurred to me that companies actually look at your LinkedIn profile, till I was asked during an interview that they had researched me on LinkedIn. Since then I’ve updated my profile, and have been contacted by a few companies. Also I’m currently in the process of looking for a Fall internship, and when I met with my counselor one of the requirements was to update and work on my profile. Yes, companies do actually look at your profile, and some even require you to submit it in addition to your cover letter and resume.

How do I grow my connections? I know that was always something I was quite worried about. All my other friends had over 500+ connections, and I’m only at like 50… Don’t worry too much about that, because you’ll built it up by networking. Every time you network or meet people through jobs or internships make sure you add them on LinkedIn, they can be really helpful for the future. Also asking your professors at the end of the semester to connect on LinkedIn is a great way to built your connections.

Join A Club!

Hello there!

I thought I would write a short post on our many clubs here at FIT, because if some are you are/were like me you might be afraid to join or don’t even know how to join. Since I’ve started FIT I’ve always wanted to be part of a club and join, but I was always scared it would interfere with my schedule and I thought I had to be accepted before I even attend the meetings. This is all completely false! I finally decided this semester to join a club and I really regret not doing it before. If like me you think it’s going to interfere with studies or school, it doesn’t. Most clubs meet during common hour (which are Tuesday from 1-2pm) and are open to anyone who has an interest in the club. Not only are they a great way to meet people with same interests, but are great to add on your resume. And you also get offered many opportunities through the clubs, that you wouldn’t elsewhere. There is such a wide range of clubs, you are 100% going to find something for you.

Spring 2017: Welcome Back!

Hello everyone!

Welcome back to FIT and hopefully the start to a successful and fun new semester. I hope you all had a beautiful winter break and had the opportunity to recharge, refresh and spend time with friends and family. I had an incredible holiday, I went back to Switzerland and it was the first time in 2 years that I’ve skied, and I forgot how lucky I was to live in such an incredible country. This year I really took advantage of the mountains and the snow to really make the most of my holidays and do activities I wouldn’t be able to do once I got back in the city. Although all of this was really nice, I’m very excited to be back in the New York and start school, and a new internship. I have a lot of plans and fun things I want to accomplish this semester, which is giving me an extra boost of motivation to start. I’ll let you know what those are once the semester kicks in. I’m also exited to start my classes, because after a very busy fall semester, I decided to give myself a mini break this semester, to take classes I always wanted to take and have more time to work on my personal blog.

Prepare for a Successful Semester

The start of the new semester is right around the corner!  Even though I am a senior, I still get nervous about the start of a new semester, but there are some tips and tricks that I use to help ease myself when entering a new chapter of the year.

  • Write down your goals.  There is something to be said about putting pen to paper and having that list hold you accountable.
  • Purchase a planner and write down all of the relevant dates seen on FIT’s academic calendar.  Having a planner allows you to stay organized and focused on the days to come and not overbook or overwork yourself.
  • Visualize yourself in class to put you at ease.  You already have at least one semester under your belt, so you know how your classes will typically operate.
  • Email your professors over break.  While you may not get a 24 hour response time, it is a good idea to check in with them to see if you will need to purchase the textbook in advance, that you’re looking forward to their class, and if there are any additional supplies or materials.
  • Schedule something fun with your friends at the end of the first week of classes.  Having an event to look forward to can help keep your mood and outlook positive!

FIT Resources

With the start of the new year it can sometimes be difficult as to where to start regarding your resolutions or goals for the year.  The resources that are on FIT’s campus are never ending and they can help you achieve your goals.  Here are some examples:

Goal: Get a job after graduation
Whether you are a freshman or a senior, or somewhere in between, the Career and Internship Center located in B202 can help you.  You can sit down with a counselor who will provide you with resume development as well as career counseling and advisement.

Goal: Volunteer/give back in 2017
In Student Life (A718), we have a club/organization called Student Volunteer Community Service (SVCS) in which we participate in events for Toys for Tots, Breast Cancer Walk, and The Children’s Hope Foundation.  You can visit this link here for more information on how to get involved!

Goal: See the world
You are able to travel abroad with FIT!  Most degree programs have opportunities in which you can study abroad for a year, semester, or a few weeks!  You can visit their offices in B119, attend an informational session, or click here for additional information.

Goal: Read and learn more
This may seem obvious, but the library has unlimited resources available to educate yourself on topics that you are interested in.  From physical books to online documentaries, the library knows no bounds!  You can schedule an appointment for research services or you can browse the shelves yourself!

Goal: Get into shape
FIT offers some incredible workout classes every day that are free for all students!  You are also able to access the fitness center on campus.  If you prefer to play a sport, FIT has a tennis, cross-country, half-marathon, track and field, dance, swimming, women’s volleyball, women’s soccer, and table tennis team!  Find more information here!
